States currency, was examined and discharged, there

turns up at an auction store in this city where he was
arrested as being an accomplice of the thief who stole
a pocket book with its contents from the pocket of a
female. For this offence he was examined and re
leased, there not being sufficient proof to convict him
of complicity in the theft, a few days after his
release he is again arrested on a charge of passing
counterfeit money and is released under bonds. A
few hours after he is a^aia arrested with a package
of cunterfeit noteB in his possession, and carried to
the Polios Barracks, and from there to the county
jail, where he remained until Saturday last, when he
i was brought out, examined and discharged for the

The Steamer CHAU 9. HARDEE li 144 feet long
over ail, 40 feet wide over all, built of the very I
Iron, and in the most substantial manner, by one ol
the very beet light draft steamboat builders in the
United States. Double engines; 10 Inch cylinder; 6
feet stroke; draft, 18 Inches; capacity, TOO bales cot
ton; ; months old.
The Steamer TWO BOTS was constructed by the
same builders and in the same substantial manner; u
130 feet lojg over all; 30 feet wide overall; doable
engines; Kinder, 16 inches; 5 feet stroke; draft, 14
Inches; 9 months old; capacity, 450 bales cotton.
The HARDEE and the TWO BOYS have each ac
commodations of ths best kind for thirty passenger*,
with state room*,' furniture, Ac., complete, and are
ready for woik at a moment’s notice. They haye
been running on the Altamaha, Ocmulgee and Sa
vannah Rivers for the put six months, and their
substantial construction and light draft admirably
adapts them lor the navigation of these waters or
any of the shallow rivers of tile South.

Savannah River, Her hall, machinery, boiler, Ac.
were only slightly injured, aud are uow In this city
and can be aesn at any time by applying to the un,

They are commission aud forwarding merchants, and
dsslera In all aorta of planters' supplies. Dr. Wilcox
is an old and well-known merchant, and Mr. Palmer,
of the Southern Insurance Company's office, is the Ju
nior partner. The firm is a substantial one, with a
good location, and the promise of a successful busi
ness.

Pilotage went down the riv. r cn the pilot boat Thomas
Taylor on Saturday morning Lst. They had eight
buoys placed c.s channel marks near and below Fig
island light, besides taking a general observation of
things fceiow and making soundings, preparatory to
the commencement of work by the dredging machine,
which, we learn, left Charleston for this place yester
day morning. The machine, ou its arrival here, will
commence operations on the river forthwith.

rested a negro on Saturday night named John Gay,
charged with severely beating a oolored woman at
Plates*, cn the Loutoviiie road. No hope* being enter
tained of the recovery oi ths woman, Justice Russell
lasaed a warrant yesterday afternoon, and had the
prisoner removed from the Police Barracks to the jaii.

several negroes near the corner of Huntingdon and
Montgomery streets yesterday afternoon, in which one
of the negroes, 3am Proctor, was badly beaten and
riouaiy injured The partiee to the affray have been

among the heaviest liquor dealers in town, have a
large stock of brandies, whiskies, gins, wines, ales
£c., at the most reasonable wholesale and jobbing
prices.
Tbs Celebrated Soda Fountain at Lippman'e,
corner Barnard and Congress streets, has become one
of the institutions of the town. On warm afternoons
the counter Is thronged. The syrups are delicious
and the cooling apparatus perfect.
Narrow Escape.—On Saturday night last, a pistol
was diaoharged near the cor&er of Bull and State
streets, the ball passing close to several ladies who
ware sitting on their stoops on State street.
Fire.—The larm of fire about seven o'clock on Sat
urday morning wus caused by tbo burning out of a
chimney in the third district.
