SAVANNAH, MONDAY, JULY S3, 1860.
LOSSES.
Upon the white sea Band
There sat a pilgrim band.
Telling the losses that their Urea had known,
While evening wandered away
From breezy cliff and bay.
And the strong tides went out with w«ary moan.
One spake With quivering lip.
01 a fair freighted ship,
With all itB household to the deep gone down;
But oue had wilder woe
For a fair face long ago
Lost in the darker depths of a greater town.
There were who mourned their youth
With a most loving truth,
For its crave hopes and memories ever green,
And one upon the West,
Turned an eye that would not rest
For far off Liiis wnereonjil# joy had been.
Some talked of vanished gold.
Some of proud houora told,
3omo spoke of friends that were their trust no more;
And one of a green gravo
Beside a foreign wave,
That male him sit so lonely on the shoie.
Bat when their tales were done,
There Bpake among them one,
A stranger, Beeniing from all sorrow free—
“ Sid losses you have met.
But mine is heavier yet,
For a believing heart bath gone from me."
•'Alas!" these pilgrims said.
For the living and the dead.
For fortune’s cruelty, for love's sure cross,
For the wreck of land and aea;
But however it came to thee,
Thine, stranger, is life’s last and heaviest loss."
