The City Park.
Some weeks since, for reasons known to the pubttc,
and which, aa wo think, fully justified Hie action of
the City Council, ordinances were passed excluding,
first the negroes, and subsequently the-whites from
the City Park. As the result of the refusal on the
part of the military authority to withdraw its opposi
tion to the enforcement of the regulation making thg;
gpeci&l distinction between the two classes of our pop
ulation, thjn pleasant place of refuge from the best
and dust of the city, continues to be inaccessible. The
consequent infliction of so great a deprivation upon
the entire population of the city, and especially the
juveniles, amounts almost to a public calamity, and
therefore calls loudly for some sort of remedial action
which will restore the benefits of so important
adjunct to the health and contentment of those for
whom it was originally provided.
Looking at the matter in this light, we are glad to
learn that a proposition is now pending before the
City Council, submitted by His Honor the Mayor, for
the reopening of the Park, under such police restric
tions, bearing upon all classes, as will obviate, in some
measure at least, the causes which necessitated the
enactment of the two prohibitory ordinances.
As a restraint upon the unrnly tongues of the
worthless vagabonds of both sexes, whose vulgar de
portment and obscene language had banished the re
spectable portion of the community from these
grounds, it provides prompt punishment, by fine and
imprisonment, for the commission of offences of the
character we have indicated, and also for the constant
presence of a sufficient police force in and about the
locality to preserve order and decorum. We believe
that the plan suggested by the Mayor is not only the
most practicable, but the best that can be devised to
remove the embarrassing difficulty; and thus restore
to the people the exercise of a public privilege which
has been debarred them by the indisoreet interven
tion of military power.
Purge out the Morbid Humors of the Blood by
a dose or two of Ayer’s Pills, and you will have
clearer heads as well as bodies. jy30-lw

Patent Improved
IRON SCREW!
FOR
^Packing- Cotton.
T HE ATTENTION OF COTTON PLANTERS IS
invited to the claims of this invention, which, in
SIMPLICITY, ECONOMY, DURABILITY and POW-
EK, surpasses any machine for Baling Cotton ever
before presented to the enuntry. Its great excel
lence in these respects makes it
THE BEST MACHINE
FOR PACKING COTTON
IN THE WORLD!
1. ITS SIMPLICITY.—It Is a new and improved
application of the Screw Power; just as simple in its
construction as the old fashioned wooden screw, as
easily managed, and no more liable to get ont of or
der. ' No ropes or pnllies as used in the cotton
presses.
2. ITS ECONOMY.—It has been demonstrated by
aotnal experiment to be cheaper than the wooden
screw. The timbers used in its construction are
mnch smaller and fewer than those employed in the
old screw; the levers being only 16 feet long, and the
height of the whole frame above the bed beiDg only
10 feet AU these timbers can be procured on the
plantation, no matter how exhausted the forest. Any
ordinary wood workman can build the frame, and
half a dozen hands will put it up in a few hours.
3. ITS DURABILITY.—The Screw and Nut are of
iron, and will last for years withont any appreciable
wear. The whole machine occupies so little space
that it can be completely covered at very small cost.
4. ITS POWER.—With a lever only sixteen feet
long, one mule is sufficient lor packing the heaviest
bales. Planters who have nsed it say that, with two
males, cotton may be compressed on tbis machine
lor shipment-
This Screw was invented jnst before the opening of
the war, and has subsequently never been very gen
erally introduced. Those who have used it and seen
it used, unanimously concur in the opinion that it la

and most reputable planters In the country shbw the
estimate in which this Screw stands witb those who
have tried it:
We have nsed and seen In operation for the last
five years, Wright’s Improved Cotton Iron Screw,
and feel no hesitatii-n u pronouncing lt the very best
Cotton Screw we have ever known. So' highly do
we esteem it, that, If practicable to obtain one of
them, we would have no other. It is easily bn lt,
simple in its constrnction, not liable to get ont of

facility.

Testimony from the Capital of the United States.
Messrs. Barrett A Co:
I was induced to give yonr Hair preparation a trial,
and can heartily recommend it as unequalled as a
Dressing, Purifier and Restorer,—giving to the Hair
a luxuriant richness, and to the head a cool and
most agreeable sensation, while it is thorough in re-
storing the hair to its natural color.
Very respectfully, W. Hamlet.

Messrs. J. R BvRRETT A Co:
I was induced by a friend to make a trial of Bar

mncl: pleased with the effect lt has had on my hair.
I was nearly half gray, and now, before using one
bottle, my head is Treed from dandruff, and my balr
has all the appe ii ance of youth. I fully believe Bar-
rett’s to be the best hair preparation in the world.
