The Government. is -jobibed tm every side.
Besides what has been done in Congress by
extravagant, mercenaiy. an^gjifalled for ap
propriations, we nave tbe following revela
tions of certain disgraceful transactions in
Florida forwarded us upon Republican au
thority. The accuser is Mi. Benj. F. Trti-*
man, who has been for months carefully
watching events in the South. We quote
from t6e ‘ffmCT: •»< H * i
Mr. Truman's statement, in a f>-\v-words,
is this—that certain members of the Direct
Tax Commlsskm^Ja.^ffRfe^ave availed
themsefvei ■o#' 3 lllMr'-T»(ft4tHh perpetrate
systematic and flagrant fraud, and that the en
tire proceeding^'the Copuniseion in the State
have been characterized by irregularity and
extravagance. -tThehr dtrtyf-afetis known, has
been simply to collect the direct tax levied
under national \aW; and under pretence of
enforcing the law, two of the Florida Odni-
missioners, in 1868, sold the city oT J^riiAu-'. /th'
dina for $10,693. The assessment which was
made the pretext of the sale was invalid, and
the sale was conducted dagglg the absence
and without the lfho'wiedg&W one of the
Commissioners. It was, however, -turned to
profitable account by Messrs. Sammis and
Reed, the two acting Commissioners, who
served themselves and their friends wiftoni
regard to right 6r decency. A lady friend of
Commissioner Reed acquired tor $200 pro
perty assessed at $5,500, and other friends
absorbed the business' portion of the {own.
But the transaction was too gross to be sus
tained, and was set aside by the Treasury
Department. -•*
In 1864, and again in 1865, the experiment
was repeated with greater caution and suc-^
cess, though with little more regularity, and'
no more regard to the form or spirit :of the
law. One Austin Smith went down to Flo
rida, burning With a desire to make some

Our correspondent exonerates Smith’s col

and AUOp, from participation in these scan
dalous proceedings.
It is not easy to; believe that the frauds,
from which the citizens of FeruaBdina have
suffered, will be permiited to enure Advan
tageously to their authors. The base, as
stated Mr. by. Teaman, clearly calls for the iu-
terpoBtttod^of the Government.
Apart frbm the frauds which the inquiries
of Mr. Trutpap have dragged to light, the
Florida Commissioners are chargeable with
mismanagement fmd extravagance. The
direct tax of tlKSvState amounts to $77,000,
Four years’ operations of the Commissioners
have produced but $47,000, and= -their ex
penses (luring the'period have amounted to
$53,000! Ail they hfrve collected iu Florida
they have consumed, and the Government
owes them, besides, $6,000.
We need scarcely add that the individuals
who have wronged the property owners of
Fernandina and squandered Uncle Sam’s
money, are among tbe loudest assailants of
the people of Florida. The greater the
knave the more demonstrative lias been his
professions of loyally. The more unscrupu
lous the Commissioner, the more unrelenting
has been his temper toward the luckless
Floridians. He has been tbe political Israel
i!e; they are the political Egyptians, to injure
whom is to do God service.
Precisely. this—the louder tbe boasts ol
loyally, the greater the personal knavery. It
was so during the war. It is so to-day, and
will be’so always. -Many of-thoee who sitffer
iu Fernandina are helpless widows and or
phans, whom the proceedings of-the Com
missioners have reduced to beggary; others
are staunch loyalists, whose only crime was
tbe possession, of houses or lots which were
coveted by aapeculative Commissioner. Is
there any wopder that such persons become
taffipMtirt'aiTOaBespot ism and knavery from
which they suffer.—JY. Y. Excess.

This man Gantt r deposited two thousand

STOMACH f ITTERS
•Are the only Medicinal Tonic in the World of which
that fluid is the stimulating ingredient.
To Dyspeptic Sufferers.
Under the general head of. Dyspepsia maybe classed
all the varieties of indigestion. Its symptoms are
so various, and differ so much in different individuals
that it fs almost impossible to classify them, la faet,
some of them are utterly indescribable. It may be
safely asserted, however, that half the diseases of
mankind spring from a disordered condition of the
stemaeh; and that the other half, whatever their
origin, react upon that sensitive and important or
gan-. AmoDg the ordinary indications of Dyspepsia
an: flatulence, a bloated and lull feeling about the
stomach and abdomen immediately after eating, a
gnawing sensation or a sense of hollowness at tbe
pit of the stomach between meals, a heavy dnll feel
ing in the head, feeble or unsteSHy appetite, occa-
sfontd nausea, -resH«sness during night and a weary,
mire freshed feeling on rising in the morning, palpita-
tinn of tilt* heart, depression of mind, sometdnga
amounting to monomania, kiss
Sion of thought, soar stomach, with raising or food
and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness of
eye, pain in I he diaphragm, feebleness and disincli
nation lor exertion, and sometimes emaciation and a
corpse-like pallor. These are a few of the direct
>igns of Dyspepsia, but as it is generally complicated
with specific affections of the bowels, the liver and
the neives, its victims have many additional torments
which are teelmically attributed to other causes.
The best advice that can be given to any one who
lias the slightest predispoeltton to Dyspepsia, is to for
tify his or Iter digestive organs by the daily use of
Hostetler’s Bitters.
The disease proceeds from a lack of vigor in the
stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tone
and renovate that organ. If the gastric apparatus is
in good working order, and can perfectly dissolve
and thoroughly assimilate the food submitted to its
operation, there will be no Dyspepsia. If it cannot
do this, 4 requires reinforcement, and the Lest of all
reinforcing agents should be forthwith resorted to.
The stomach is the commissariat of the system. It
supplies the elements of life to the whole i>offy-~ in
it is prepared the material of blood, m|is$e, ; 3b<ne
and filtre, and if it tails to purvey that material in
quantity, and of a proper kind, the whole body sui
ters, and with it the meuial faculties. Therefore pro
tect tile commissariat department. Don’t let the eiK
emy obtain possession of it.. It is easier to prevent
disease from getting into an organ than to expel it
after it becomes a chronic fixture. Coneidiw the
first indication of uneasiness iu tbe stomach as a
sign that Dyspepsia is preparing tu attack, and battle
it at once with the GREAT REPELLANT.
Bat if it is too late to prevent, remember that it is
not too late to cure. It is believed that there is no
case of Chronic Indigestion that can withstand the
remedial operation of
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters.
This belief is grounded on twelve veais’ experience
of the efficacy of the preparation. The first instance
of Its failure to give relief is yet unchronided. Tf it
ever had failed, the voluminous correspondence ad.,
dressed to the proprietors from all parts of the United
States and South America, would at least include
one letter expressing dissatisfaction. But no, there
is not one. The testimony, extending oyer a period
of more than a dozen years, is all of the approving
tenor. Certainly this Is a sufficient warrant for
claiming that tee BITTERS are a SPECIFIC FOR
INDIGESTION IN ALL ITS VARIETIES.
Hostetter’s Bitters
Household. Medicine.
It is a great fallacy to Bnppose that the nauseous-
ness of a fnedldne ia anypMof of ita value as a res
torative. The truth ia, teat If the palate revolts
against a remedy, it cannot da much good.
HOSTETTER’S BITTERS
Are not unpleasant to the taste, and always soothe
