As the book W|U be sold exclusively by subscriptioa.

A CARD.
“THE LOST CAUSE.”—A CHANCE FOR
EX CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS.
Nnr Yoke, July 2, IMS.
In the early hoars of the night of the 30th of Jane,
I wrote the last word on the last sheet Of “ TIE Loot
Gaube,’* my long meditated hiotary of the late war.
I have accomplished my task. Within twelve months
I have written more than three thousand pages of
manuscript, examined aa avenge of at least two hun
dred references in different portions of the narrative,
and analyzed and annotated some four or five hun
dred letters from Confederate Generals and poll Met an a
I believe I have composed a work that will live and be
a possession for my countrymen.
But what I proceed to say I sincerely declare is not
intended as an announcement in the Interest ef my
self or my work. The book will be oat in a few
weeks ; it is sold only by subscriptions obtained by
agents, who, It is designed, shall cover every square
mile of tbe Union. It has occurred to me, knowing
how many people there are in the South needy, dis
tressed aud desirous of employment—especially among
soldiers of the late Confederacy—to make known w
them a chance for employment, viz : canvassing for
**TmR Lost CaoSh.” • I know that many of tbs people
of the South have no faith in Northern advertisements
of ‘agencies paying immensely.” But they will be*
live me when 1 declare that auch has been the ignores
of subscriptions to ‘‘Th* Lost Cause,’’ that many of
the agents are making from twenty to forty doUaran
day. I have been greatly surprised at the proMa of
the business, and 1 hove determined to designate it to
many of my countrymen in need as an opportunity
for profitable employment.
These agencies are bestowed exclusively by my
publishers. But I have requested them in distribu
ting agencies in the Southern States to prefer as far sa
possible those if ho bore arms for tbe Confederacy,
and those who have a pert in thoee glories which •’The
Lest Cause” seeks to commemorate. All correspon
dence about agencies must be addressed exclusively to
my publishers, thus: “E. B. Treat k Co., No. 654
Broadway, New York,” or branch offices. I recom
mend them for a liberality such as I have never be
fore experienced as an author, and which I have rea
son to suppose inctadm all broughtinCb business re
lations with them.
