many stories told, undoubtedly with truth,

They were tbe recipients of a lecture ou tbeir

considered not worth shucks, unless be owns

They are a gay and festive crowd, have a

was forced upon the Brooklynites this week,
which, upon /the feet -being made public,
shocked the whole community. It appears
that the cholera broke out in the Jail and be
came epidemic within its walls. There were
qtujteitt number of deaths, and nefjr cases
were hourly appearing. The Jail is a noto
riously filthy place and is in a filthy neigh
borhood. The District Attorney, undoubt
edly tnoveA by dictates of humanity, *nd
in order, as he thought, to save life, or
dered the discharge from custody of over one
hundred persons incarcerated therein on
light charges or held for bail. These poor
creatures were oveijoyed at their release
from what they deemed their judicial grave
but many of them had no hetnes to.go to,
ahff consequently went to the Almhonsi.
The result has been that the cholera is now
raging at the latter institution, several of
those from the Jail having died, and the dis
semination of the scourge to parts of that
fifty where ^«re Jvus none previously devel
oped. Never did man get such a berating in
this vicinity as has friend Morris for doing
what he considered a humane act.

A Short and Sad Story. •'
About ten weeks ago a! gentleman passed
through this city on his way to Arkansas,
where he intended to locate. An Englishman
by birth, he had been for years a commercial
traveler for a house in one of th£ largest mer
cantile cities in Europe, and in that capacity
h«A visited every part of the ttfdrtd. He was’
a polished gentleman, and spoke fluently
q^veral different langgaigpp and had accumu
lated an amount of information concerting
the countries through which he had traveled
that was not only valuable" but interesting in
the highest degree to those 1 wher were fortu-t
nate enough to be irttmbered among hie
friends. ’ Of a good fanffly in his natrve ooua-
try, he had moved ib thA best circles of'the
commoners in Enghmd, and was,, hi every
sense of the term, a perfect gentlemen. Of a
sensitive and retiring disposition, he . was
illy calculated, however, to make acquaint
ances, and lacked -the assurance which we
daily learn is necessary to tbriveinthis world
of ours. He had heard a glowing account of
our sister State, aud went to Pine Rluff, where
his means beciune almost exhausted. Writ
ing to his wife to remit to him at Camden, he
started to that point on foot, where he had
arranged to meet a friend. In this he was
disappointed, and the unsettled state of the
mail facilities preventing the receipt of means
from home, he determined to. return to this
city and await here until he heard from his
family. ..
About this time two gcntleihen from Ken
tucky arrived in Camden on horseback, alid
put up at a hotel there. In the morning
their horses were missing, and the citizens
turned out, headed by the city marshal, and
started in purauteof the missing animals.

stranger, he was Immediately arrested as the
horse thief, and told by the marshal that if
he would teli who were his confederates In
the matter be would l»e released. A denial
of any knowledge whatever pf the theft was
all that could be elicited, and the marshal
then took the halter off one of the horses,
and making a slip noose, passed it arouud tbe
gentleman’s neck and hung him to a tree
until, as the officer stated aftei wards before
the magistrate, “be turned b^tok in the face
and his tongue stuck outhaff a yard.” When
life was nearly extinct he was dropped to the
ground, and when it again began to assert
itself be was once more urged to confess. As
before, nothing could be told, acd a second
time the hanging -scene was enacted uintil
death nearly came to the rescue. Hu was,
however, cat down, and then taken before a

real culprit, a well known horse thief, i who

After his acquittal, the gentle maa. too

been 90 foully wronged, started for this city,
and lived upon sneb precarious subsistence

done any outdoor labor, the sun, : combined

had its effect upon him. Wishing toreaob

As was to be expected from his reputation, Mr.

which was well rendered. Aa your readers can judge
of its merits for themselves when tt is published, I

The people were somewhat die Appointed pi not

When this great grief, with its crushing weight of

couch. A mother's and sister’s gentle hand smoothed
her dying pillow—white strauger hands bore her slow
ly and sadly to the silent tomb, echoing in mournful
cadences a dirge on the young and beautifril gone
fhftn the earth forever.
She has slept sweetly, amid the quiet shades of the
family grave-yard of Mr. William D. Jones, former
proprietor of these Springs, whose family watched
ever and ministered to her in her last illness, mid
and gracing it with the dowers she loved ao well.
