DEATH OPCAPT. JOHN W. ANDERSON,
“Another good man has gone to his rest”
fey the telegraph, yesterday morning, the
sad news was received of the death, at Ma
con, on Tuesday night, of Captain John W.
Anderson, a native and resident of Savannah,
and one of her noblest and most virtuous
citizens. The news of his death, whilst it
shocks oar entire community, ws9 not wholly
unexpected. For several years past his
health has not been vigorous. ' Some weeks
ago he went to Indian Springs, where he wa9
severely attacked with varioloid. As soon
as he was able to travel be set his face home
ward, but on reaching Macon his disease as.
earned a new form, resulting in his melan
choly demise.
Captain Anderson was born in Savannah
in 1805, and resided here all bis life. He
received his collegiate education at Union
College, Schenectady, under the presidency
of Rev. Dr. Eliphatel Note; and, on bis re
turn to Savannah, commenced commercial
life in partnership with Francis Sorrel, Esq.;
subsequently he went into the factorage and
commission business with his brother, Geo.
W. Anderson, Esq., and fo continued until
within a few years before the la^ war, when,
on the retirement of his brother, he carried
on business in his own name. At the time
of bis decease he was conducting business
with three of bis sons. .
In 1827 Captain Anderson joined the Re
publican Blues, one of Savannah’s cherished
military organizations, and in 1836 he was
elected its Captain, which position he held
until his resignation in 1863, after an arduous
service of two years in the recent war. Of
his military life it is not necessary to say
more than that he was beloved by his com
pany not only for his soldierly bearing, but
for his benevolence and generosity, aod that
he held himself in readiness always to pro
tect and defend his native State.
In early life Capt. Anderson connected
himself with the Independent Presbyterian
Church, of Savannah, of which he continued
a useful and exemplary member to the end
of his life; having for several years past been
also one of its ruling elders, and for many
years the assiduous and faithful superintend
ent of the Sabbath School.
It was impossible for such a man not to
have received many and marked tokens of
public esteem. As an Alderman, an acting
Mayor of Savannah, he discharged his duties
faithfully, and to the public satisfaction. Un
obtrusive and domesticin his habits, and in
the midst of pressing Business engagements,
yet such was the confidence of his fellow-
citizens in his judgment and integrity, that
they repeatedly called him to service in the
Legislature. He was first elected a repre
sentative in 1838, served several years in that
capacity, and in 1819 was elected speaker of
the House, and was afterwards a senator from
Chatham county.
These evidences of public favor, and these
calls upon his time, did not interfere with
his benevolent operations. He was one of
the founders of J)e Kalb Lodge, New 9, of
Odd-Fellows: was the Grand Representative
to the Grand Lodge of the same order in
1819; was Grand Master of the State; and in
1854 helped to found|the Savannah Benevo
lent Association, of which he was the Presi
dent at his death.
Capt. Anderson was an earnest and active
friend of Savannah and her commercial in
terests. One of the earliest advocates of her
fine system of internal improvements, he was
for many yeans a director of the Central and
Southwestern Railroads, and occasionally the
acting president of the former. Emphatically
an active man in ecclesiastical, benevolent,
commercial and business matters, he was
always employed in something useful and
noble. His place cannot be easily filled
Society, the State, the Church—all have lost
a friend. Of his loss to the fcmily circle
it doec not become us to speak. He leaves a
widow and six children, who have, in their
great bereavement, the heartfelt sympathy of
this entire commnnity, and of 1 all who knew
John W. Anderson.

The President has issued a. proclamation,
which, after setting forth ths fact that war is
going on in Mexico, and that the Emperor of
Mexico has issued a decree for the blockade
of Matamoras, which decree is given at
length, announces that the decree of blockade
will t be held void r by the United States as
against , out citizens, and thftt sb's&tempt to
enforce it against the citizens of the United
States will be disallowed.
This action is important when viewed as
the initial step to a reiteration of the prin
ciple known as the “Monroe doctrine,” the
enforcement of which may involve the United
States in a difficulty with France, as the
patron of the Mexican Emperor. It is stated
that the principle was fully discussed among
the members of the Philadelphia Convention,
bnt was not acted upon, probably because
the President had determined to jgsue the
document alluded to at once, and thus muni
festly declare the adherence of the Govern
meat to the principle by practical means.
