been Immensely increased.
In General*
An organization of Southerners has pur
chased a plot of ground near Gettysburg, in
which to bury the rebel dead who fell in the
battle at that place.
—A rattlesnake was killed near Belleville,
Texas, recently, which was fourteen feet long,
six inches thick, and had forty-two rattles.
Three men, armed with fence-rails, had a
desperate combat with it.
—An oscillating sewing machine has been
introduced into a Baltimore ship-yard. The
invention does away with a large amount of
hand-work, and does the work much quicker.
It is used for sawing out twists, bevels, and
bends in ship timber.
—Some of the fractional currency now
ready to be issued by the Treasury Depart
ment is printed, it is said op Confederate
bank-note paper, bearing the letters C. S. A.,'
in water mark, which was manufactured in
London for the rebel Treasury, and captured
on board of a blockade-runner.
—It is expected that there will be a famine
in Bohemia, as that province has had to main
tain two enormous armies for several weeks,
and in very many of its districts the crops
have been destroyed by the cavalry horses.
—The English Government has appointed
to a colonelcy in the British army Mr. J. C.
Walker, who was a Confederate major gene
ral during the late war. It is more than
likely that the “ appointment” was pur
chased.
—About eighty feet of the brick cornice
to the Penitentiary building at Syracuse,
New York, weighing some fifteen tons, fell,
a few days since, burying several men who
were filling their bods, killing one and se
verely injuring three.
—The New York Journal of Commerce,
alluding to the fact that many country mer
chants are deterred from visiting the large
cities by reason of the cholera, to the neglect
of thir usual purchases for the fall trade, say s
this absence of the uflur Jtmber of buyers
has induced an increased desire to sell, and
those who take advantage of this feeling, and
purchase now, are not likely to regret it
-Bull-Run Russell was recently arrested
at OlmuU as a Prussian spy, and bad the
pleasure of spending some hours in jail under
Austrian bayonets.
—The receipts for customs for the first
eleven days of the present month, at the four
ports of New Tork, Philadelphia, Boston
and Baltimore, were over five million dollars.
—A subscription has been ’started for the
purpose of purchasing the tower at Rouen,
now in private bands, in which Joan of Arc
was imprisoned. The scheme seems to have
been very successful, and the Government
Km promised to give 25,000 francs. The list
contains the names of several eminent Eng
lishmen, among others those of Lord Broug
ham, Mr. John Stnart Mill and Mr. Bright.
—Senators undertook to rule Mr. Lincoln.
He early said to an intimate friend: "There
are about a dozen Senators who propose to
use me as they would a penknife—open it,
■hot k, and pat R le their pockets.” They
are trying the same game on Andrew John
son, with poor success.
—The Florence, Ala., Journal learns that
nearly everything In the shape of vegetation
is being destroyed by grasshoppers on a por
lion of the farms about eight miles west *f
that place. The corn and cotton are being
considerably damaged; the corn blades are
almost entirely destroyed. .
