In pursuance to the objects of our appointment by
the ConvonBon held in this city cm the nth and 13th
of July, we have appointed the first Wednesday in
September—being the 5th day of the mouth—at Ma
con, Ga., for holding a Convention to take into con
sideration the importance of the construction of the
link, in the Savaunah and Memphis Railroad, from
Opelika to Tuscumbia.
The Committee hare performed the duty assigned
them,-of laying before the respective Boards of Trade
of Savannah, Macon. Selma, Memphis, Cairo, Chicago,
St Louis, Louisville, and Cincinnati, the importance
of the proposed road to them, commercially, and asked
that the capitalists and commercial interests of
those cities be represented in the CanrentiQn; and we
feel no hesitancy in saying they will all respond bf
sending delegations of their most discreet and saga
cious men. It is a work iu which the entire as
well as the entire States of Georgia, Alabama and
Florida, have deep interest.

Selling Luji’ou without a License.—J. H. Plate,
who k« «‘j*s an cnubUnbrncut a short distance from the
< iiv. auil which i«a general rendezvous for negroes
and disorderly characters, was brought before His
Hunor tin* Mayor yesterday morniug, charged with
ailing liquor without a license, and also with keeping
bis bar room open on Sunday. Plate stated to an offi
cer of the police on Sunday !sai—when he was re
quested to show his license—that be did not have a
city license, not thinking it necessary to procure one
as t:t lived outside the city limits, but had a county
license. On being brought before the Mayor yester-
iUy morning, His Honor stated that Plate was the
liroprietor of the establishment where the negro
gimrtenuan was murdered a short time since, and
that it was a place of bad repute. His Honor also
stated th.n the jurisdiction of the police extended two
mil** outside the city limits. On account of the igno-

nod having shown a willingness to do so, he was fined

mrcv m disposing of meat without a license, was
brought up before His Uouor the Mayor for trial yes-
terday. Nlu ftall made the geueral excuse that he only

when he could purchase a quarter of beef from the
utlii-r butchers about the market, but always paid hi
market lee*. Oil account of the absence of the Clerk

butchers who sell on a large scale of the privileges
they pay for, and, iu addition, is a fores taller, as much

tb*- country carts, aud resell them again at an ad
vanced price.
Narrow Escape from being Shot.—George Wil
liam*, oue of the overseers over the chain gang, was
brought before His Honor the Mayor yesterday morn-
in?. charged with firing two shots from a double-bar
reled j;uu inside the city limits, one of which came
wltlnn a few feet of striking a small white boy, Wil-
1 am- -out.-1 that he was not aware of its being an of-
teuce to tire the gun where he did, as he had seen
persons fire theit pistols off near the same place on
several occasions. As Williams stated positively that
he was only taking out the old charge to reload his
gun. and fired up in the air, he was let off with a fiue
of five dollars.

Circular.
We claim for the Plobcxck the followiDf advan
tages over any and all Sewing Machines:
* It gink** four different stitches, the lock, knot,
double lock, and double fcnoi, on one and the same
machine. Each stitch being alike on both aides or
the fabric.
- Every Machine has the reversible feed motion,
which; enables the operator, by simply turning a
thumb screw, to bare the work ran either to the
right or left, to stay any part or the seam, or fasten
the ends of seams, without turning the fabric.
r*The only Mach ne having 6 flail-adjusting
shuttle tension—the amount of tension alwtya being
in exact proportion to the Mas of the bobbin.
tw~ Changing the length of stitch, and from one
kind of stitch to another, can readily be . done while
the Machine ia in motion. X
tr The needle to easily adjusted.
dT It is almost noiseless, and can be used where
quiet is necessary.
-Its motions are ail positive; tiler* are no
springs to get oat of order, and lla simplicity enables
the most inexperienced to operate it.
- It does not require Oner thread on the under
than for tlie upper aide, and will sew across the
heaviest seams, or from one to more thicknesses of
cloth, without change of needle, tenslou, or break
ing thread.
T~ The Hemruer is easily adjusted and wUl turn
any width of hem desired.
ir No other Machine will do ao great a range ol
tom k ns the Florence.
(-It will hem, fell, bind, gather, braid, quilt,
and gather aud sew on a ruffle at the same time.
The taking up of theslack thread is not performed
by the irregular contraction ofsai'e coil or uncer
tain operation of wire levers. The precision aud ac
curacy Willi which the Floresoe draws the thread
lute tlie cloth U unapproached in any Sewing Ma
chine hitherto offered in the market.
Wc furnish each Machine with “Barnurn's Self-

Patent Improved
IRON SCREW!
FOR
Packing * Cotton.
mUE ATTENTION OF COTTON PLANTERS IS
X invited to the claim* of this invention, which, in
SIMPLICITY, ECONOMY, DURABILITY and POW
ER, surpasses any machine for Baling Cotton ever
before presented to the country. Its great excel
lence in these respects makes it
THE BEST MACHINE
FOB PACKING COTTON
IN THE WORLD!
1. ITS SIMPLICITY.—It Isa new and improved
application of the Screw Power; jnst as simple in its
construction as the old fashioned wooden screw, as
easily managed , and no more liable to get out or or
der. No ropes or pnllies aa used in the cotton
presses.
2. ITS ECONOMY.—It has been demonstrated by
aotnal experiment to lie cheaper than the wooden
screw. The timbers used in its construction are
much smaller and fewer than those employed in the
old screw, the levers being only 16 feet long, and the
heightof the whole frame above the bed being only
10 feet. AU these timbers can be procured on the
plantation, no matter how exhausted the forest. Any
ordinary wood workman can build tbe frame, and
half a dozen hands will pnt it np m a few hours.
X ITS DURABILITY.—The Screw and Nut are of
iron, aud will last for years without any appreciable
wear. The whole machine occupies so little space
that it can be completely covered at very small cost.
4. ITS POWER.—With a lever only sixteen feet
long, one mule is sufficient for pocking the heaviest
miles. Planters who have nsed il say that, with t wa
mules, cotton may be compressed on this machine
lor shipment.
This Screw was invented jnst before the opening of
the war, and has subsequently never been very gen-
.-rally introduced. Those who have nsed it and seen
it used, unanimously concur in the opinion that It is
UNRIVALLED AS A COTTON SCREW.
The following testimonials from some of the host
mini most reputable planters in the country show the
estimate In whicli this Screw stands with those who
have tried it:
We have used and seen in operation for the last
five years, Wright's Improved Cotton Iron Screw,
and feel no hesitation in pronouncing it the very host
Cotton Screw we have ever known. So highly do
wc esteem it, that, tr practicable to obtain one of
them, we would have no other. It is ea9lly bn It,
simple in Its construction, not liable to get ont of
order, packs well, with great power and with great
facility.
