HILLSBOROUGH MILITARY ACADEMY.
Of the many cheering assurances that tbe
South is rapidly recovering from the prostrat
ing effects of t he late war not tbe least conspic
uous is tbe general interest manifested in tba
subject of education. In whatever direction
we look we are cheered by the indications of
unusual activity in educational circles. It is
encouraging to know that oar youth, deprived
during the period of Lhe war of tbe oppor
tunity of attending schools and colleges,
will now enjoy even greater advantages than
formerly. There is a general desire that na
tive Southerners shall teach tbe Southern
youth, and the day has at length arrived
when teaching has come to be ranked amoug
tbe most honorable professions in tbe South.
Among the many institutions of learn
ing now in successful oyeralion is tbe
Military Aceademy at Hillsborough,
North Carolina, of which General R. E. Col
ston is superintendent- It is with more than
ordinary pleasure that we notice the revival
of this Academy, under auspices that presage
a complete success. The professors are men
of learning and high character, and liuaft-
been carefully selected with reference to their-
general fitness as teachers of youth, and ibeir
peculiar qualifications for the several posi
tions to which they are assigoed. Tbe -Prin
cipal, General Colston, who is a graduate,
and for fifteen years a Professor of the Vir
ginia Military Institute, served with distinc
tion in the late war, and is generally known
throughout the Southern States as a gallant
officer and an accomplished gentleman.
The buildings are new and comfortable,
consisting of handsome barracks erected in
1859, for tbe special purposes of a military
school, and sufficient to accommodate one
hundred and fifty cadets; together with mess
hall, hospital, and all other necessary build
ings. Tbe situation is about a mile from the
town of Hillsborough, within a few hundred ..

quantity of wheat produced exhibits a con
siderable falling off when compared with last
various ports in Europe for immediate ship
meat. Any deficiency in France is likely to
Spain, Italy,
giqm, which
promise to exceed an average, and prices
everywhere indicate a fair abundance.—
From this me may draw tbe consoling in
ference that there will be but little of, bread-
stuffs shipped from tba United Slates to
Europe, and that consequently corn and
flour will flow into the Southern markets in
such abundance as will reduce materially tbe
present high prices. We are inclined to be
lieve that the crops in U>^' Booth, although
exceedingly unpromising, will yield a larger
product than tie were led to suppose some
weeks since. We hope and believe that our
planters will be agreeably disappointed in
their present gloomy expectations, and that,
with good management and rigid economy
the yield will be sufficient to save both man
and beast from suffering.
PARSON BROWN LOW IN PHILADEL*

That hoary old apostate and reprobate,
Parson Brownlow. is at the head of a delega
tion of Tennessee Loyalists, so-called, in at
tendance op the ffogttriry TffftdK,’ feddven
tion in Philadelphia, and is at present one of
the lions of that gathering of self-constituted
representatives of Southern Radicalism. The
Press gives an account of a meeting of the
Union League on Friday night, on which oc
casion, after Mr. Durant, of New Orleans,
had delivered himself of an half hour’s
harrangue, in which be gave a most pathetic
account of the late riot in that city, the par
son Governor of Tennessee held forth in a
characteristic speech. As a specimen, we
give the following extract;
I am sorry to *»y to you, gentlemen, that matters at
the South are not very promising. I an not * sensa
tionalist nor an alarmiit; I am not very easily alarm
ed, but I tell yon it la the purpose of the rebels to
bring on another war.

need not look to the Administration of Andrew
Johnson for help. Bat I say to yon in allcandor, and
with the knowledge of what I am saying and the use
that may be made of it, that if the wicked spirit of
the South, tbe rebellious spirit, combined with
the treachery and copperheadism of the North, shall
bring upon this country another war, and force you,

Committee usually meets. According to well
established usage, Mn Raymond is clearly
the only person possessing authority to act
in the matter, and he cannot rightfully be de
posed from his positibfi except by a National
Convention of the patty. It is stated
the Secretary 1 of the ExecnthrcflCommittee
and a few of the members are in accord with
Mr. Raymond in his present politicaf atti
tude, and that the result of the split will be
to break up tbe committee and leave the
party without an anthorized head. As the
expulsion movement was intended as a cat
direct to Mr. Raymond, and to onst him and
all others who are not Radicals, from the
committee, its failure will be as humiliating
to the conspirators as It will be gratifying to
the anticipated victims and their friend*.
Tbe action of the branch of the committee
which proposed to assemble at Philadelphia,
if it met, will doubtless be recognized by
the Radicals as authoritative, and Mr. Ray-
moud will be virtually expelled notwith-
stauding his skillful flank movement.' >
Since writing tbe above the telegraph in

mittee met in Philadelphia on Monday last
and passed a resolution expelling Mr- Ray
mond and others, and that the conservative
wing met in New York on tbe same day,
but adjourned on account of the few mem
bers present.
The Chicago Times thus pleasantly touches
up tbe dentists who met in Boston a sbott
time ago:
The Boston Dental Convention had a reso
lution before it that it Wonld like to see But
ter and bear Butler, and lbat.it wished But
ler bad been In command iu New Orleans
during the late disturbances. Dentists who
meet in Boaton ought lo be aware that in den
tistry as in everything else, a good deal of
progress is made by those who tniud their
own cosiness. They should see in the case
of Dostie an instance of the ill effects of a
man’s not attending to his own business.
Dostie is an unfortunate dentist who did not
mind bis own business, and who in conse
quence got severely injured. The proper
occupation of dentists is to look into people’s
mouths, and not into the mouths of political
parties. - The mouth of a party sometimes
swallows those who attempt to took into it
It swallowed the New Orleans dentist, and
it might swallow a Boston dentist with just
as tittle trouble. Tbe desire of the national
convention of demists at Boston to see But
ler is not open to objection. The whole de
sire might be strictly professional- It might
proceed from the fact that Butler is supposed
to have fangs. The dentists may have
wished to look upon the teeth of the animal
that devoured so many women, children,
dogs and clergymen. But in any other sense
the resolution to see Bntler is reprehensible.”
