Virgo, Mg. Dickereon, who wu
discharging of thefihip, was inforgn
an* fbnr o’clock yesterday morning (i
worked all night on the ship) that a box of shoes had
been placed on the wharf, and, from appearances, it
had been broken open. In looking around with a
lantern for the box, Mr. Dickerson discovered Eobison
underneath a tarpaulin which was covering a portion M J Col
Of thag&dda, with liis pockets full of sugar, and two E
pairs of ladies’ shoes lying on the top of the box which
had been broken open. Eobison was immediately
arrested and conveyed to the Police Barracks. HI* f
Honor the Mayor, on hearing the evidence yesterday
morning, thinking the case a fit one for £fO*eeution,
'turned the prisoner over tothe Magtatrjftfcfr <^mrt.
This is bnt one of the many daily thefts that are
perpetrated along the wharves by those who are en
gaged in working about vessels discharging. During
the past winter it was almost a daily occurrence, boxes
and barrels being broken open and rifled of a great
portion of their contents, while- whole packages, in
mfnjr instances, .were carried, off fry dishonest dray
men, to the serious inconvenience of the consignee,
as well as loss to the agents. It would appear that the
wharf thieves, encouraged by tl|e .rsnug little, profits
derived from last fall^s plundering, have ‘detertnined
to continue the same business this seasou. iSb© police
will keep an eye on them.

Georgia Soap.
We are indebted to Messrs. Purso & Thomas, agents
of the Georgia Chemical Works, of this city, for a
package of very superior soap, manufactured in that
establishment. In compliance with their request, we
have given the Georgia soap a trial, and are prepared
to pronounce it equal iu every respect to the best
Northern turpentine soap that comes to this market.
Much credit is due to the enterprising gentlemen at
the head of the Georgia Chemical Works for the in
troduction of the manufacture of an article so indis
pensable, aud for which such large amounts of money
are annually expended. Their success has demon
strated that there is uo need to send abroad at least
*°i °hc article of universal family consumption, and
w ill have the effect, we trust, to stimulate enterprise
in other departments of domestic manufactures, the
importance of which has heretofore been overlooked,
greatly to the disadvantage of bur section.
There are many other articles, for which we have
been accustomed to send abroad, that can bo manu
factured at home, with a saving of first profit, freights
a ud other charges, besides giving employment to oufr
<nvn popujation. We sincerely hope that among the
changes incident to the events of the past five yeajgft,'
we may see home enterprise and industry directed io
the production of whatever will tend to render our
people independent, even in the smallest degree, of
*■ reign sources of supply.
