Cotton.—The drag in the New York market for the
past week has its effect here, and about 408 bales
have been sold daring the week under review ft a
concession of )4 to lc. on the quotations of last week.
Yesterday a more active inquiry existed, though wa
bear of no sales at higher figures than stated ahote.-
It should be observed, however, that some holders are
atill firm in their demands for former prices.
The utter irregularity of the market, and the very
small stock offering of desirable lots, render it almost
impossible to give a correct review of the cotton mar-'
kat, and we would merely state that, baaed on actual
salea, middlings (Liverpool classification) may be
quoted at 29 to 29)4c-, though as a general rule held at
30c.
It may be added that, in tho opinion of many, the
market here has Bettled down to these figures, though
we cannot look for any activity until the new cra^i
comes to market and many regular buyers now absent
return to the city.
In regard to the crop we have leas encouraging ac
counts. Owing to tne very different opinions advanced
from different sections, it is, however, almost impos
sible to arrrlve at any conclusion other than that the
season has, on tho whole, been unfavorable; and to

Mayor’s Coart.
Before His Honor, Mayor E. C. Anderaon, the fol
lowing cases were disposed of yesterday ;
Jot- Hudson (colored), charged with vagrancy and
using profane language in the streets, was tumed.over
to the colored committee, to work on their cemetery,
Simon Snell (colored), charged with being a suspi
cious character—found Bleeping in the carpenter shop
of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad—was discharged,
the prisoner having shown that bo was engaged in
discharging lumber from a train until half past seven
o'clock, and then had to wait until between eight »d
nine to be paid for his work by the negro who em
ployed him, aud in the interval iliat elapsed between
quitting woik and getting his pay he had fallen asleep
ill the carpenter shop.
A Bailey (colored) was charged with running away
from the Colored Cemetery, where he was put to work.
He was arrested by another negro and taken before
His Houor on the above charge. His Honor stated
that no negroes had been authorized to arrest any
person for the purpose of compelling them to work,
or for any other purpose, and that when they found a
vagrant negro their duty was to have him arrested by
the police aud brought before him, when, it the facts
proved sufficient, as in the present case, that the pris
oner was a vagrant, he would be dealt with accord
ingly. Bail, y said that he was arrested and taken out
to the Cemetery to work, and they gave him nothing
to uat but hard tack and tough beef, and as he couldn't
stand tnat kiud of fare he left. The negro who made
the arrest stated that the workmen assigned to them
by the courts got a plenty of the very best to eat, and
that was the main cause of their running away; they
worked very well until they had put away their ra
tions, when they generally managed to get off in the
woods and take the back track for the city.
Policeman Conway, charged with disobedience of
orders, and being an inefficient policeman, was dis
missed from the force.

Still very light, tad almost a lethargy exists in thi

is, in fact, estimated that aU the bagging in the coun

This supply is but sufficient, it is calculated, for say

are therefore naturally waiting to determine whether
