SAVANNAH, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1866-
CLEVELAND, OIJIO.
A Song For The Boy* in Blue.
Ho! comrades of tbe sash and sword,
The cros3belt and the bayonet’s glitter—
To see that lost for which yon poured
Your blood, indeed were bitter!
f‘Tho Union” was your heart’s one cry—
For this you saw, with steady eye.
While the din of battle filled the sky*
Your brothers bleed, yoor brothers die
Their last breath “For the Union.
The flag you bore had all tie Stars,
The oath you took to keep them bound you ;
Beneath that flag you won your scars,
Beneath it victory crowned yon!
Now hear your stricken country s call,
Raise every hand—and swear by all
The things that soldiers sacred call.
'“No single star from its place shall fall,
No State be lost to*the Union!”
The plotting knaves who stand confessed
Rouping a permanent war of races,
Can show no badges on the breast—
No corps hath known their faces!
Brothers are they of “Gideon's band”
Who followed you down to the conquered laml,
And whoso purses did wondrously expand
While you fought the rebels, hand to band,
Re-asserting our glorious Union !
They were captain in the “Home Brigade,
When our country needed each man s sinew ,
In the war they drove a prosperous trade,
And wish it noW*to continue.
-‘Our foes,” forsooth, “they wil^not trust;
, A volcano, indeed. Is beneath the crust!”—
The sword once drawn must never rust,
And the South forever lie in tb^dustr—
They will hear no talk of Union !
i
Of frqfch revoUs they plant the germs.
New wars are in their tyranny tendered ;
But the Boys in Bine will keep tin*-terms
* On which the South surrendered!
We trust the men with whom we fought,
.We know them gallant in act and thought—
Tho dream they cherished has come to nought,
iAnd to loyalty now, by rough me ms brought,
We welcome them b*ck to the Union!
So, ccgnrades of the belt and sword.
Still keep in line till your work be finished!
From the flag which above you in battle soared
No star must be diminished!
“The Union” was your heart’s one cry—
For this you saw, with steady eye,
While the roar of battle filled the sky.
Your brothers bleed, your brothers die—
You have saved—now preserve the Union!

—The N. V. Tima^, noticing Butler’s re
mark that the “only right left to rebels was
the right to liang,” says “Bailer having
failed as a soldier would no doubt succeed
admirably as a hangman.*’
The Lifiyctte (La.) Courier says an es
timable lady, a witness in court, the other
day, testified that she was sixteen years of
age, had Keen twice married, and wa; the
mother ot two children.
—It is said that the drouth has almost
mined the crops in some portions of Mis
souri. Hundreds of acres of corn fields,
near Lexington, will not make seed, and it
is too late mnv for rain to do any good.
—It is stated that the new Secretary of
the Interior, Browning, has discovered that
Secretary H ir'an, before retiring, had filled
every position in the Bureau, and had even
made appointments to vacancies that would
occur a month or two ahead.
—Commodore Lawrence Rousseau, former
ly of the C. S- Navy, died trt New Orleans
on the 4th, aged 7G years. He was buried
without parade, but his funeral was attended
by an immense concourse of the most re
spectable citizens.
—An exchange states that Van Amburg’s
elephant, while crossing a river during a
journey in Illinois, liked the water so well
that he refused to come out for four
hours, though shot at with a revolver and
a musket and otherwise “persuaded” by his
driver.
—An exchange stsLes that there is a large
quantity of counterfeit greenbacks in Georgia,
which are “so skillfully executed as to defy
detection." Then, they are just as good as
the genuine bids, and there is no use in mak
ing a fuss about it. They are likely to be
worn out long before the Government is able
to redeem them.
—Lo! tho poor darkey! Even Parson
Brownlow has turned upon Bim. He first
urges the Radicals to mother civil war, aud
then proposes, in case it should come, to
burn every fence rail, outhouse and dwelling
in the eleven seceded States, and leave then
without “form and void.” Would you leave
the p tor freedmen nought whereon to lay
his head, Parson ?
—The Annapolis Star says that the reports
of the riot at the camp meeting near Hano
ver switch, in Anne Arundel county, were
at first much exaggerated, and that although
several were hurt uone were killed, and none
seriously hurt. A number ot those who
were hurt received their injuries by being
run over by the crowd. Benson, the young
man who was shot at the altar, is reported
to be still alive.
—The mission of General Bureaugard to
Europe, in aid of the finances of the New
Orleans and Great Northern Railroad, is un
derstood to have been a sueeess, and the
result is, the prospects of the corporation are
most encouraging. The proposal was ac
cepted to fund the accrued interest as a sec
ond mortgage, aud to begin at an early day
the payment of interest upon the original
bonds. The American bond-holders will no
doubt at once fall into the arrangement.

There are as many roads to fame and fortune ae

FKOMTHE HON. THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
Washington, Jannary.l, ts84.
Gentlemen:—Havingstdttu R verbally to you, 1
have aohesRbtipnin writing the belt that I experi
enced marked benefit from vour Hoofland’s German
Bitters. During a long ana tedious session of Con
gress, pressing and one root duties nearly prostrated
me. A kind friend sbggested the use of the prepara
tion I have named. I took his advice, and the result
was improvement of health, renewed energy, and
that particular relief I so mnch needed and obtained.
Others may be similarly advantaged, if tbey desire to
be. Truly your friend,
THOMAS B. FLORENCE.

Mesas*. Jonu A Evans,
Gentlemen:—I have recently been laboring under
the distressing effects of indigestion, accompanied by
a prostration of the nervous system. Numerous rem
edies were recommended by friends aud some of them
tested, bnt without roller. Yonr Hooflland’s German
Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried
them, end whose favorable mention of the Bitters in
duced me also to try them. 1 mast confess that X had
an aversion to patent medicines, from the “thousand
and one” quack --Bitters," whose only aim seems to
oe to palm off sweetened and dragged liquor upon
the community, in a sly way; and the tendency of
which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard
Upon learning that yours was really a, medicinal
preparation. I took it with happy effect.' Its action
was not only upon the stomach, bnt upon the ner
vous system, was prompt and gratifying. I feel that 1
