Prominent Floridian.—The
,.) Press of the 8th insL an
nonnecs' the demise, at bi3 residence near
that place, on the r>th inst., of Gen. M. Wl.it
^niitli. His health had not beou robust for
i loiKf lime, but no apprehensions were felt of
a fatal result. Gin. Smith was a lawyer of
eminence in bis Stat e. and at the solicitation
of liis people, filled places ot trust, honor
abd i&sffShshjtlity, and alwaya bore himself
so as to command general respect and con
fidence. He was socially a most excellent
gentleman, and his death will be general.y
lamented in the community in which he lived,
and bribe State generally.
THE FLORIDA CONNECTION.
iAst evening we received a visit from Mr.
Haines, the energetic aud efficient Superin
tendent ot the Atlantic and Gulf Road, who
gave us the gratifying assurance that the
communication by rail with Florida will be
consummated certainly by the 15tli ot
next month, if uot a feiy _ days .earlier. He
informed us also, that the’hew road will he
immediately supplied with running stock
adequate to the demands of the travel aud
traffic which is expected to follow its com
pletion.
■iTwn consignments ot iron for this road,
arrived at this port yesterday, and the re
mainder is expected in the course of the en
suing week. ski* * .■ i » _ i
There are but eighteen miles to be laid
and the road-bed being in a state of entire
preparation for the reception of the rails, it
is* quite apparent that Mr. Haines has given
himself sufficient lime to realize his expec
tations should no accident occur to obstruct
the progress of the work.
All the Decency.
In the Rascal Convention on Thursday
last the following scenes occurred, which
cannot fail to shock the moral sense of every
right-thinking man in the community:
Mr. Hamilton, of Texas, read the dispatch in yes
terday’s paper* relating to the President’* visit to tl»e
Northwest. On reading that part of Mr Seward s
speech, and inquiring whether the audience desired
Mr. Johnson for King or President, loud cries of
“Nary one” were heard from all parts of the Conven-
A Delegate—“No, sir; we’d see Andy Johnson 3G3
degrees into hell, with Bill Seward and Montgomery
Blair on top of him, first.
Parson Brownlow gave utterance to these
disgusting remarks:
Some gentleman, not through any unkind feeliug
toward me, bat through s mistaken appreciation of
my motives, has said that we'were afraid of the negro
suffrage question and sought to -dodge it. Why, I
should feel disgraced now and forever if I felt doubt
ful on any subject of national concern. I never was
claimed on both sides ot any .question, aud never in
tend to be. labile I am satisfied ‘with what has Ijeen
done, I am the advocate pf negro suffrage and of'im
partial suffra^ei [Great applause, including “three
cheers for Brownlow.”] I would sooner be dectep to
any office under heaven by loyal negroes than hy die-
loyal white men. [Applause.]* I would sooner asso
ciate in private life with a loyal negro than a dislpyal
white man. I would sooner be buried in a negro
graveyard than in ahrebel ■ graveyard. [ Applause. It
I havdafter death to go eithqr to hell or to heavijn. I
shall prefer to go with loyal negroes to hell than
traitors to heaven.
These sentiments, it must be borne in mind,
remarks the Philadelphia Age, were uttered
on the floor of the Radical Convention,! in
the same
Fred. Douglass spoke, and before the same
body which received with enthusiastic
' plause Gjp. GesryJ.lifie d
for Governor. “The'pity of it—’
of it!”
-j|ct i* Jheil’’ resolutions, but fail to protest
by a single word that it is one with, which
they and Congress have no concern. After
the elections are over they will renew the
old cry that “impartial suffrage” is essential
to the protection of “loyal” men in the
Southern States, and, if triumphant, will en
force the principle. >. *,,
Upon another point of thelt policy tWey
are equally explicit and determined. In
case of their success this fall they Certainly,
mean in make a daring and unscrupulous nt-
temptdo rejnove the President from office.
Nothing has yet transpired to indicate the
nature of the charges on which articles of
impeachment are to be based, and perhaps,
the Radicals themselves, do|^>^1^jy9^fipWr ;
But that such is their intention is stfowS by'
the threatening remark of Senator Chandler in
the Philadelphia Convention, that “Andrew
Johnson once said that treason was a erhne,
that traitors should be punished and treason
made odious. If Andrew Johnson docs not
stop about now he will ascertain that treason
is a crime, and that traitors shall be pun
ished and treason mad eodious.”
Similar threats were made by other speak
ers equally prominent and with more empha
sis and meaning, who announced very plainly
that the President would probably be im
peached and removed next winter. , The
countiy is* certainly indebted to these fac-
tkmfsfs for giving it timely notice of the in
famous purposes of their party. The people
am now see the imminency and msgnitq.de
of the peril that threatens them, and it is to
be hoped will deal with it in a way that will
surely avert it and rebuke the heartless con
spirators. But the President is not to be
frightened from the post of duty by the vio
lence of Radical traitors. He is determined
that the constitution shall be the supreme
law of the laud, and that men as well as
States shall accept that instrument as the
rale cf their action. He means to restore
the States to their former plsces in the Union
upon that principle, and hence the fierce and
bitter fight waged, not only against the doc
trines he advocates and promulgates, but
against him personally.
The Disguise Thuown Oef.—It is stated
that Thad. Stevens has taken the slump in
Pennsylvania for “General Geary and
jjegro equality.” In a speech recently made
Ay him,'hie 1 said in reference to impartial
suffrage, that, “popular or unpopular, he
would stand by it, until relieved of the un-
-protitable labors of earth.”

OBITUARY.
Died, in this city, on Wednesday, September 5tb,
1806. of old age and general debility, JAMES SMITH,
aged 80 years, m native of the county of Cavan, Ireland,
aud a resident in Savannah for the last thirty-five
years. The deceased, for the past three years, was a
patient sufferer from the pressing hand of the fell De
stroyer, which claimed bim for Us victim. He never
mul-muted, but with Christian fortitude and willing
obedience be was prepared for the inevitable decree
to forward on to “that bourne whence no traveler re
turns." Having reared, with some credit to himself,
a large and numerous family, who will ever cling to
his memory as the ivy around the oak. his only regret
at leaving was the separation of earthly ties from those
bom his life-long solicitude was centred. Many
friends mourn bis departure, while the family hearth
has lost the influence which gave it a congenial
warmth in. his smiling presence. The “old
chair” is vacant, but memory will revert to other
days and bring back the scenes that once so happily
clustered around it *
