Mayors Court*
The only case brought up before Hie Honor, the
Mayor, yesterday morning waa that of H. Beals, a coal
passer on board one of the New York steamers, who
was arrested Wedneeday night on the charge of being
a suspicious character. Beals stated to His Honor,
the Mayor, that he had been to a house to see a friend,
and after leaving there for a short time desired to re
turn, and not being acquainted with the city, and
having a few drinks aboard, he accidentally got into
the wrong house. The occupant of the house which
he entered stated that he knew the prisoner was under
the influence of liquor atjhe time and was inclined to
take his statement as being correct. Beals was sent
in charge of a policeman to the Captain of the steamer
to which he belonged, with instructions to find out
whether he was a suspicious character or not. If the
Captain vouched for his character he waa to be left at
the ship, and if not he was to be brought back for fur
ther examination.
A. Wilcox 4 Co., the well known Bay street mer
chants, have a small balance of a large consignment
of Seed Kye, warranted to be as good as any »o the
market, still for sale, at their store on Bay street.
They have also furnished us samples of the best to
bacco we have seen within a year, and we learn, from
other sources, that they can furnish fine wines and
liquors, warranted, and various other articles, not ex
cepting even a small lot of the best ground nuts we
have ever seen in. Savannah.
Financial and Commercial.
Savannah Market.
Savannah, Friday,Bept 13, 1866.
BE VIEW or THE 8A VANN AH MARKET.
The improvement referred to in our Mat week’s re.
view has been folly sustained, despite the very unfa
vorable weather. Quite a number of country buyers
have been in the market, and some large sales havfe
been made, especially in dry goods.
As a general rule, the stocks are unfortunately low
at present, though heavy shipments are on their way.
Our dry goods dealers, it is true, are replenishing, but
the stock of general groceries is quite limited, a late
season having been anticipated, and many large pur
chases lying in' New York waiting for a reduction of
the very high tariff of freights.
In financial circles there is still great depression,
and on all sides the cry of “no money” continues to
be heard. This must, of course, impede business, and
is apt to 9 indnce a credit system, very much to be de
precated and guarded against
Exchange.—The supply of Sterling Is limited, with
Weekly Magazine.—Estill 4 Bro. are the agents
here for the New York Weekly Magazine, a very inter
esting periodical, of which we have received the
monthly number. It is full of readable miscellany,
and is sold at a very economical price. Fred. S. Hill
is proprietor and editor.
Sale oe the Schooner Glenroy.—The schooner
Glenroy, together with all her sails, rigging, anchors,
chains, hawsers, boats, 4c., was sold at auction yes-
-tefilay by Messrs. Bell, Wylly & Christian, on recom
mendation of tliQ-Board of Port Wardens, and brought
nine hundred and eleven dollars and fifty cents.
First Sea Island Crf^RiN.—The flrit bale of Sea
Island cotton received here this season was brought
by the Gulf train, on Wednesday afternoon. It was
raised on the Kilkenny plantation, which is in charge
of Captain Dutcher.

The lassitude of our climate and the tendency to
fevers, through prostration, render a general tonic
of indispensable importance. We know of nothing
answering tlUs purpose like the admirable Ferro-
Phosphorated Elixir of Caswell, Mack & Co. It is a
triple tonic, being a combination of three of the best
tonics of the Pharmacopeia: Iron, which enriches
the blood; phosphorus, which renews waste of nerve
tissue; and Calisaya, which affords vigor to thedi-.| Central Railroad
gestive organs. The Elixir is palatable to the taste.
Altogether, we know of no lemedy that can compare
with it. Sold by Lippman, Savannah.

proved that market, which has been responded to I —CGO bales cotton, 21 do wool, 35 do old rope and
hero. Yesterday a much better tone was evinced, bagging, 180 I bis and sacks fruit, £8 bales domestics,
holders being decidedly stiffer in the higher grades of o hhds beeswax, 24 bbls iron, 323 hides aud mdse,
even running lots, though poorer cottons are still neg- per gchf Mluy Mankin, for Boston—i: 5 000 ft inm-
lected. We quote at 30 to 31c. for New York mid
dlings. It should be remembered, however, that the few
buyers here, and the small and undesirable stock of
fering, precludes as yet any idea of a regular market.
The Receipts—Are very light The old crop is pretty
thoroughly marketed, and but little of tha new is
ready for transportation. Movement in the sta
ple is much impeded by tne law requiring the tax of
three cents to bo paid before shipment, and not as
heretofore, at the ports. An effort is being made,
however, to remedy this, which it is thought will be
successfuL By the first of October we may expec
full arrivals.
The Chop.—East of the “River” we continue to get
very diverse accounts of the prospect, though ou the
whole decidedly more favorable than some time pre
vious. West of the Mississippi there is still great
complaint on account of the caterpillar aud the ten
dency of the plant to shed.
Where W. P. Wright declines “guessing,” it
would be in very bad taste for us to express an opin
ion in regard to the incoming crop.
