Dear Sir ; Our General Superintendent has to-day
transmitted for publication in the Bainbridge papers,
an advertisement of a reduction of twenty-fivO per
centum on the general rates of freight over Urn road,
from Thomksviile, for all articles destined to and ooas^,

This h** been authorized by the Board of Directors,
with a view to offer to the peopte of Decatur the only
facilities in their power before the extension of the
’road, and to present Inducements to the people of the
counties west of the Ochloekonee. to make their ship
ments to and from the seaport of their own State. *
We deeply lament our inability to undertake the im
mediate extension of the Road further woat ; which, if
ever attempted, could not be accomplished in time
for tne operations of the impending seasqn ; but we
trust that the liberal reduction on rales 0. transport*;

Among the many benefits conferred upon maritime
natiOns by men ol science, none, since the introduc
tion of steam, rank higher in importance than the re-
searches and labors ot Captain Maury. Perhaps the
declaration of Humboldt, that to Captain Maury be-
longedi tba distinguished honor,of having founded a
that could be paid to scientific research.
From this r t search tho Hutted Kingdom, as the
bead and chief of maritime nations, is deriving un
told advantages and wealth, and yet is the only mari
time power in Europe that has not, publicly and offici-
oilj recognised the eminent services of this distin
guished nautical-Geographer.
The grand conception offcotlng observatories and

Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden
were represented, and one of Its most eminent and
practical reaulto eras the establishing in London, by
the advice of the Boynl Society, and through Lord

the Meteorological Deportment of the Board of Trade,
over which Admiral Fitzroy now presides.

When Seccbi, of Roue,- mentions “H Maury;” he
expresses tho feeling which ie-nog so widely and
justly entertained for the man who has not only col-
looted such stores of useful knowledge, but diffused it
afterwards iu a most agreeable manner.
His words have been translated into several lan
gpoges*—a sure proof oi their value.
Actual sfogou loads of Mtury'f charts and qnarto
volumes of directions have been given away in Eng
land, very many also in other oo|mtries.all distributed
tree of charge to the recipients. Captains of ships
have been tups especially favored.
Opinions of their value have not varied since the
first consignment reached the Board of Trade In 18544.
No crltMiem can destroy the intrinsic value of such
systems of average as those by which hid results were
drawn from accumulations o: facta.
Navigation has been greatly improved by his publi

United States District Attorney Chandler, of Norfolk,
