Notwithstanding the appajeot ac^astmeot
of the late difficulties between the different
powers of Europe there are still indications
of an undercurrent of dissatisfaction. A
leading London paper says there is no use in
disguisiog the fact that, though peace has
been signed, Europe seem very for fro$» W-
tering upon that new era. ot peace, whereof
Napoleon lately spoke. The Government of
both Austria and Prussia, are busy in en
larging and improving tfceiir arupcf, ai®
France is keepiDg pace'with these two
powers. Italy indeed is said to be about to
reduce her army to a comparatively small
lorcc, ind reduction is absolutely necessary
to save her from bankruptcy. But military
preparation is the rule, reduction the excep
tion; and those who t take gloomy views of
GODtineDtal politics have ample reason for
doing so now, in the opinion * of those wb<J
are in a position to judge Correctly.
A Good Suggestion.
The Columbus Enquirer has beep
quested by a planter to make public tbc
suggestion of a change in a plantation cus
tom, which he thinks will be found advanta
geous. - It ia that planters should make the
yearly terms of their superintendents (form
erly called overseers) commence on the first
of December instead of the first dT January.
This change, he says, would secure on the
plantations the presence of the. superinten
dents or overseers during the Christmas holi
days, when most of the negroes are apt to
be absent, and some of them out on piun-
deriog expeditions. It would, moreover, en
able the superintendents to acquaint them
selves with the arrangement of tba plgaUv
tions and the capacities aDd dispositions of
the laborers before the first of January, ai>8
thus informed they could commence more
uuderstandingly the work of the new year-
We commend the suggestion to the consid
eration of planters.
