TO OUR COUNTRY PRtESDS.
As much' interest is felt throughout the country in
regard to the prospects of the cotton and other crops,
we will bo grateful to our planting friends and others
in the interior for information on that subject. Those
who have opportunities for obtaining.valuable infor
mation in regard to the growing crops, the working
of the free-labor system, and kindred matters, of gen
eral interest, will confer a favor by communicating
the same to us.

THE PRESIDENT AND TIUC CO'STITl-
TIONAL AMENDMENT.
Extraordinary, efforts have been made
recently by certain influential journals In
New York, heretofore classed with the Con
servative party to induce Air. Johnson to
modify his policy to the extent of" recom
mending the proposed Constitutional amend
ments to the adoption of the Southern un
represented States. It is gratifying to learn
that these apostate papers failed to ac
complish what they desired. ■ T’bey unex
pectedly found the integrity and firmness ol
the President proof against tire, appeals of
friendship or the suggestions of policy. Au
thority has been given by the President for
a most emphatic denial Of any intention on
his part Wabandou a single principle he lias
declared in reference to the question of resto
ration. The .Washington correspondent of mu
the New York Herald, who haJHH^ateil
with the papers referred to, ^^^H^resi-
dent considers that the. were
prepared in violation of the Constitution,
and are therefore invalid? and that it would
lie in contravention of. his oath ol office .to
encourage them in any way. It is stated,
however, there Is reason -to believe that lie
-contemplates recommending to Congress at
its approaching session, first the admission of
the representatives of .all the States, and the
proposa! of amendments to the Constitution,
embracing in a less objectionable form, the
essential elements of those now peudiDg.

Wk clip the following from in
umn of the Mrcon Telegraph of Tuesday, :
"Our planters should not think of sending
t.heii cotion to Savannah, or any other point
but to Alacon, where they can obtaiu the
very highest price for it—as they will see by
referring to the" quotations—and where they
can obtain their supplies as cheaply as at any
other point within the State. Our commis
sion merchants do not eat up the planter’s
crop with charges, but are very moderate,
aud ’succeed in gelling tbe "very highest
prices for their patrons’ cotton.”
We will do the senior editor of the Tele-:
graph tbe justice to say that we do not be
lieve be wrote the article from which the
above is an extract, or that .so unjust an in
sinuation against the merchants of Savan
nah, whose business integrity is well known
to him, and among whom he has. many
personal friends, ever received his sanction
or endorsement. No one knows better than
the editor of the Telegraph, that our mer
chants transact business on legitimate princi
ples, and, that while they challenge fail-
competition with those of other cities of the
South, they are incapable of descending to
dishonorable means, either to obtain the
trade of the country or to increase their
profits at the sacrifice of the interests of pa
trons.
We have nothiug to say against Macon as
an inland market. We have no doubt that
her merchants offer every inducement in
their power to secure a full share of the trade
of this section, and that her cotton factors
do tbe best they can for themselves and the
planter. But we feel very confident that
cotton on its transit to the great markets,
wifi be polhing enhanced in value nor the
profits of the producer increased by a tem
porary halt in Alacon. We are equally con
fident that supplies are sold by our mer
chants as close to their original cost as they
can be in Alacon, or in any other ielaud mar
ket. Cotton may be worth a great deal
more up in Macon than it is in our sea-port;'
gtpeefies may be a great deal cheaper there
than here, and Alacon merchants may be
able to do business at less than living piolils,
but we opine it will be a difficult matter for
the Local of tbe Telegraph to make sensible
people believe it.
THE ITALIAN OPERA.
Onr appreciative citizens will greet the an
nouncement of the opening of the Opera
season next week with unaffected satisfac
tion. Strakosch, who for yeajs Jins been a
princely caterer to tile musical world, has
promised ns Susini, Irfre, Gbioni, Canissn,
•Patti Strakosch, Errani, Alarra and Ardn-
vani, and a host of celebrities, and we know
him too well to apprehend any failure. The
people of Savannah cannot' forget his suc
cessful exertions last winter to please our
critics, and since then the troupe, mplerhis
direction, has been largely strict bafistUaiil
the services of some of the best artistes*who
have appeared in this coantry [have-been se
cured, at a great expense, and with the ex
cellent chorus increased to twenty-fiVte mem
bers, selected from the best available talent
in New York, and a Grand Qichestra, ftStasti-
tute this the best troupe now in this coun
try. The lady artists are already most favo
rably known to us, so <.is^ also Signor Sueup.
Irfre, one of the latest and best aCtipisAioris,
is pronounced by all the criticB- the finest
tenor on this side of the Atlantic.^
The operas promised to us arc mostly
known to many of our readers, with the ex
ception of Ceispino e la Comare and Ali-yer-
beer’s posthumous i grand operi J.'Afr%^i\*e.
We will refer to these operas at some future
time, but we can say now, that these two
operas will be produced with.uruusujil splen
dor, and in the same grand style as when
brought out at. the Academy of Music, in
.New York. y' f \''ry-4
. Mr. Strakosch has with hihi fbe'nccfesary
scenery for the L'A/ncaine, such as the grand
ship, in the third act; the Mancanilla Tree,
, and all other accessories, entirely nesf; and
costly wardrobe, all of which were marie at a
great outlay; in New York and Paris.
Mr. Herbert, the agent of the cotfljpNhy,
advises us that the sale of tickets will com
mence as follows : Subscriptions for the six
nights, with the choice^ of seats, on Friday
morning, and on Saturday, tickets for either
of the opera nights can be had at Sobreiner’s
music store. - ’ \
The New York Tribune persists, in Ufi de-
mand for the prompt trial of Mr. Davis. It
says, in reference to late statements concern-
iDg the probable farther postponement of (he
trial: “We feel that the Government Is dis
gracing itself by its treatment of ttaifi pris
oner ; that be ought to-have been brought to
trial long since, and let him know his fate-
that it is playing a shabby, shuffling, cow
ardly part in regard to him f that it should
either retract its charge of assassination, or
have him indicted and tried thereon, Accord
ing to law."

Appointments by the President
contemplated to continue the river improve
ments until a stiff greater depth of water was
attained. The war not only caused a sus
pension of this important work, but involved
the necessity .of placing artificial obstructions.;
in the channel, by which tbeeUfren't.-Jla®‘
been diverted from its course and new flats
sad shallows created, rendering-thejurrtgj^ (
tion more difficult, and the draught of water
less than it was previous to tbe cotnmeoce-

Mayor Anderson proposos that for the
clearing out and deepening of the channel
the city shall purchase a dredging machine,
to be under its eontrol, and to be employed
not only in’the important service of deepen
ing the channel of the river, but also In

dredging machines'are ‘ kept constant ly em
ployed, and one at lean-would find constant

Prophetic.—As far back as 1827, Air. Gal-
houo, then a member of Congress, in a-

the Federal Government, prociaimed tlik fob-
lowing great truths:
“ Emanoipatiou (said that .great Sou diem' igupv we

satisfy these fanatics; that gained, the >mkt step
would be to raise the neg roes to a social and political

it is, would'be happiness to ours; Umi*- Uib Mother

Who has the hardihood to say that the
prophecy is not being rapidly fulfilled?
That it is the ulterior purpose of the Iiadi-i
cals to fulfill it they admit themselves.
Whether they will acquire the power through
the medium of the ballot box is a problem!
soon to be solved. It is not improbable that!
they Will get it by the elections this fall, and

The Ultimatum.—The New York Inde
pendent is the organ of the most rabid wilig
of the Radicals, and its expressions upon all
questions of national politics are literally the
reflections of the views ahd opinions of the
extreme men of that party. A late number
.of tbe Independent contains this significant
-paragraph;
No leading Republican in Congress means
to admit the ten waiting States simply on
the adoption of the Constitutional Amend
ment. These States are to be admitted on
no conditions short of the equal political
rights of their loyal citizens, without distinc
tion of race. A reconstruction of the Union
on any other basis would be a national dis
honor. Until the rebel States can come
back on this basis, they shall not come back
at all. ”
,Tiiis is the Radical programme in a nut
shell, the spacious wording- of the Constitu
tional Amendment how before the eannti'y to
the contrary notwithstanding. “Until the
rebel States can come back b£ thlshasis, they
shall not come back at all.” Candid, .dis

NONPAREIL-FRENCH GUANO”
W HICH is now offered to-Planlors possesses quali
ties which are peculiar to it alone, aud render it
far superior to auy other known, as has beeu fully
proven by the **French Academy of Sciences,” and
also by practiced persons of enlarged experience in
every department of Agriculture.
Among the meiitoriona’qualities which peculiarly
distinguish the “ Nonpareil French Ouano,” may be
enumerated the following:
let. It will promote the growth of Cotton,' Corn, To
bacco, or »uy kind of grain or vegetable, equal to A
No. 1 Peruvian or Mexican Uuano, as has been fuily
tosted at the aauie time being entirely free from the
objectionable properties of the above, as it is a Perina-'
nent Improver of tbe 8dil, instead of a stimulant- —■.
2d H can be apjilied to' the leaves-, an- wall aa_the
roots Of plants, without any danger of-banning them,
if Used properlv, and we ^uaramce that wherever ap
plied the soil will -retain its moisture, and will not
bake, even the most clayey. ■-
83, it wiH prevent Worms or Insects from destray-
ing either plant or grain, and wherever it ia applied
every kind of worm or insecls will instantly disap
pear, its properties being repugnant to insect liio of
every kind. This quality alone will be a great benefit
to agriculture when ifis estimated what vast numbers,
as Southern planters know, have lost their crop by in
sect depredations.
In a circular it is impossible to.fully enter into the
merits of the “ Nonpareil French Guano,” but we as
sure the public that wc have not exaggerated, audit
only remains'fbr those interested to test its value,
when we feel confident that it will rapidlywnpercede
all others. *

Oxhts—My gardner has been making experiments
with vonr.”Nohpariel French Guano”—he has ap
plied it to beeu, cantelopes and very young cucun.ber
vines, which at this season of the year ire very liable
to injury from insects. As far as we can judge, It is
a first-rate article, and comes up to your claim of its
meritt. I shall use three tons on wheat and rye this
fill.
