THE EUECliUSa. t>
To-day the elections are field in Tennsyl-
vunia, Ohio, and Indiana ' for Congressman
and State officers. The telegraph has in
formed us that excitement was at a high pitch,
and (hat it was increasing as the election day
drew near. The canvass has been carried
on with great spirit from its opening. The
Conservative men in Pennsylvania antT-New
York are confident of a largo increase of their
numerical strength, _au<l a{e working with
energy. Popular- demonstrations on an im
posing scale have been .of daily occurrence,
which have added fuel-to the flame of excite
ment.'
There have not been .wanting indications of
uneasiness on the part of the Radicals. Their
organs have given manifestations of alarm at-
the certain progress of conservatism. This
shows, that Mr. Johnson’s policy is, near to
success at least, especially in the great State
of New York,.where, it is stated, Mr. Sew
ard's influence is still powerful. From Illi
nois there is much encouraging info ninth on.
Changes of an important .character from
_ the'Radical to the Conservative shie are fre
quent in this State. It is hardly to bo doubt
ed that the Conservatives may gain members
enough to destroy' the t*o-thirds power of
the Radicals in fefiforifetfi Congress. With
this, the country would be satisfied at pres
ent. . »-■/..
In Pennsylvania,, the Radicals, despairing
of being able to cany the elections by 'fair
means, are resorting, it is said, to their usual
method of fraud and misrepresentation. It
appears that they have colonized in Philadel
phia, as well as in other portions of fee State,
a large number of voters from Maryland and
New York, and hope to secure their votes
by a fraudulent assessment. It remains to
be seed whether the fraud, thus contemplated
will be detooted and frustrated.
