MARINE DISASTER.
steamship EVENING STAR FOUN-
DERED AT SEa.
TWO UV1DREO AND FIFTY UVXI
LOST.
tbs - cvero equinoctial gales which have prevailed
Elnce the 1st of the month, had prepared ns for news
cf marine disasters on our coast but we were in hopes
tilt those already recorded comprised the extent of
ft; Jimac 1 . It is, however, our painful duty to re
port another startling calamity, in the loss of the
CMiuiliip Evening Star, which foundered at sea on
tie 3J met., off the coast of Florida, with some two
tumlreil sml seveuty aouls on board. The first intel-
hgence which we received of this melancholy disaster,
to, linnished by passengers on the Sylvan Shore,ar-
ttrre hers yesterday from ^Feruandlna, Flofifla.
The mail steamer Evening' Star, Capt. Knapp, of
the Sew York Mail Steamship Co’s. Star Liue, sailed
tom Sew York for New Orleans, Sept Sd. at 3 o'clock
p. j[. She encountered a severe gale at 2 o'clock in the
afternoon of the 3d inst, 180 miles eaatof Tybee Island
Atu r weathering the storm some seventeen hours, she
foundered at 6 o’clock, on the murning of thq 3d inst.,
with two hundred and seventy aouls on board, only
smatccu of whom arc known to have boon saved.
There seems to have boon only threo or four life
boats on board, in one of which the Chief Engineer
and Purser, with six of the crew and two passengers
succeeded alter being capaised several times in keep
ing afloat until they were picked np by the
Norwegian bark Fleetwing, by which they wero
transferred to the schooner S. J. Waring, on which
vessel they arrived here last evening.
A second boat took sixteen persons from th. sink
ing ship. among whom were the Captain and Third
Male. This boat was capsised some twelve or fifteen
times, the Captain being lost the fourth time she up
set. The boat arrived at Fernandina on Sunday
morning with six persons and two dead bodies on
board.
Only one passenger was saved on the third mate’
boat. His name is Frank Gerrard, of No. 61, Bond
street. Brooklyn. The names of the survivors in this
boat are
Thomas Fitzpatrick, Third Mate.
John Dempsey, Seaman.
John Campbell, do
James, Howe, do
Chancellor Mason, Steerage Steward.
Frank Gerrard, Passenger.
If any of the other boats left the ship it is presumed
they were immediately swamped, as they hove not
been heard of.
Since writing the above we have been furnished
with the following letters which give the circum
stances of this fearful disaster more in detail:
