CARRINGTON & CO.’S GENERAL EX'
PRESS AND FORWARDING AGENCY.'
Iu another column will be found the card
of tbls Company, by which it will be seen
that Col. James Gardner, well known
throughout Georgia and the South, during
some twenty years as proprietor and editor
of the Augusta Constitutionalist, is Vice-
President and Secretary. The business
the Agency 1s to purchase in New York or
Europe any article, large or small, single or
in quantity, and forward the same with cer
tainty and expedition to any part of the
couulry, at prices less than they could
purchased by the parties ordering them, in
person, aud at a very moderate commission
The advantages of such an agency, by which
persons requiring single articles or even
large quantities of goods are enabled to avail
themselves of the experience and business
knowledge of responsible and reliable agents,
thoroughly acquainted with the markets,
nnd whose large transactions with manufac
turers and importers ennblc them to purchase
on better terms than could be obtained by
individual strangers, are too apparent to re
quire argument. In Col. Gardner, the al
ready well established firm bas a valuable
acquisition, whose identification with its
business cannot fail to prove mutually ad
vantageous to its interests and to the South
ern public, whose respect and confidence he
possesses in so eminent a degree. In this
connection we most cheerfully adopt aud en
dorse the views of our Augusta cotempora-
ries. Speaking of the agency the Constitu-
ionalist Bays:
The uarae of Colonel Gardner will suffice to give it
an enviable Southern endorsement As proprietor
and editor of the Constitntkmalist during a lengthened
period, he ha*? stood in the very front rank of publi
cists. As a man of first class intellect, he has ahown
among the distinguished thinkers and writers of the
South always conspicuous and always in advocacy ot
the loftiest theories. Polished, logical, epigrammatic,
clear—these are the salient traits of his mind. Jio
one could conduct a controversy with more spi
rit and energy, and, though frequently compell
ed to severity, he neyer forgot the parliamenta
ry courtesy of professional or social polemics-
To his new line of duty he brings powers ma
tured by experience and atblectic traiuinr in the
arena of great epochs. It will dot be too nrtich to,
predict that the same method, nerve, masculinity and
address characteristic of his journalistic career, will
naturally at lapt themselves kindly and irresistibly to
another pursuit.
We bespeak for him, and the enterprise of which he
has become a prominent official, the good wishes and
practical encouragement of the South.. On publishers
of daily and other journals be has a special .claim of
.confraternity. We are assured that his efforts for
their benefit will be strenuensfer feasted in .matters
appertaining to the peculiar wants of the profession.*
We wish the enterprise God-speed and trust. tfet our
brethren of the Press will not Ail to give it the ^coun
tenance it richly merits.
In an article recommending the Express
and Purchasing Agency to the favor and
confidence of the Southern public, the
Chronicle says :
The union of the rips experience, sound judg
ment, extended personal influence and ample means
possessed by Colonel Gardner, with the known
energy and efficiency of Mr. Carrington, must be
regarded as a fortunate combination. While we
cannot but regret the loss of one who has shone so
conspicuously among the eminent writers and think
ers, as well as practical business men of the South, it
s pleasing to know that he is up a position where he
tn be useful to his old frienddr afed where also be will

THE CHOLERA.
The mortuary report of the Board of
Heath, which appeared in the News and
Herald of yesterday, confirms our statement
of Monday last, that the cholera is gradually
abating in this city. The report shows
a still further decrease in the number of
deaths from this disease, there being only
three white persons, and thirteen blacks du
ring the week ending the 8th in*t Indeed, it
may be said as applicable to the white popu
lation the scourge has almost entirely disap
peared. It is the impression of physicians
that it will wholly disappear among the
blacks even, in a few days, and this is the
feeling of our citizens. As an evidence of
the confidence in this belief we may state
that the families who left the city duying the
hot months, in consequence of the preva
lence of the disease, are. re turning.
The business of the city is hegining to feel
the effects of the subsidence of the cholera,
and we hope to see the fail trade open vigoceus-
ly in a few days. Our best physicians concur
in the opinion that there is no danger how
in visiting the city, and it is hoped that our
country- friends will gladden us with their
appearance, in the pursuit of harness and
pleasure. , . . , . ,
