the small safe containing all the local-run money ptefit-
ages from St. Louis to Cairo, to Cincinnati, and a
bag from Nashville, was unlocked and rifled by
tho thieves; after which they pitched the through-sale
overboard, and rang the bell for the train to Mop*
The train was checked up, aud the robbers signalled
the engineer to go ahead again, just aa they
leaped off. Everything seemed to isvor the-nefanous

jumped off, and about sixty yards from the place tte

fit aw York City.
The Richmond Times, alwflys entertaining
and instructive, pays a well-deserved tribute
to the enterprise and conservatism of the
great free city of New York. It says :
The great city of New York has more brain,
heart, patriotism and decency than can be
found in .all the gutters of Radicalism north
of the Potomac, There we find enlightened
views and expensive sympathies prevailingr,
which extend beyond 4h0^ citizen’s door-sfl,.
and comprehend in their range not only tho
kindred South, but the civilized people of all
nation^ and climes. Foolish, narrow-minded
Radicalism looks not beyond a day or night
-of hate and passion, to be spent at some pro
vincial town, t* at soifit'railroad Stfition.
Bat the grand and comprehensive intellect
of that conservatism which characterizes the
city of New York overleaps the barriers of
prejudice and grasps with foresighted pene
tration the advancing truths of the future,
years and years before they we apparent tb
the bleared eyes and scattered senses of fa
naticism. Hence it is that the city of New
York has so wondronsly grown and pros
pered despite that hate and jealousy which
have frequently been meanly leveled at it by
the fools' and fanatics who have at times got
ten into power'fit Albany, a^d sought, like
the great eagle, towering in his pride of
strength.
But wealth, brain, decency and refinement
have been too potent for the Radical dogs
and jackals to make’any impiession on the
Queen City of the Western world, orto'rie-'
nonsiy damage her interests. While the
storm of madness and blind rage has swept.
the provinces and minor cities of ihe Jfvrtb.f
the city of New York has stood sterfilyand
heroically unmoved amid the general deca
dence of popular virtue and patriotism, a
conspicuons monument of'unsullied repub'i-
canisrn, when all around her have bowed the
knee to false gods and listened to talse pro
phets. Boston, hide-bound in its self- con
ceit. purse-proud it its wealth, sinful in its
self-righteousness, and ridiculous iu its pre
tensions to superior wisdom and godliness, is
simply contempt.ble when v e view her poli
tically, socially and morally by the side of
New York. Philadelphia, called by way of
burlesque, “the city .of Brotherly Love,’’ in in
tellect, dignity and decency is an odious
pigmy by the side of the great Free City of
lire Western hemisphere in all that dignifies
and enohies the metropolis of a va t State.
The world respects and honors New York;
it laughs at aud despises the meanness, big
otry aud fanaticism of Boston aud Philadel
phia, which are no more than brawling, gos
sipping little cross-road villages compared to
toe liberal and whole-sould city which flings
Wide her gates to the commerce and civiliza
tion ol alt Christendom. In the- march of
ideas, New York is a centaly ahead ot the
two Radical cities to which we have alluded,
.is- a sfirsarasteffi
and villages, Boston and Pniladelphia ought
to be sent there aud kept in straight jackets
until tney mauitest cerebral nnprovemeiitaud
returning sanity. Tire gcabkt ol Radicalism
uas interned every city ot the North of any
importance except New York. There it can
make no effective lodgment. The people of
mat emporium of the New World have done
uoihiug to be ashamed of, aud hence no need
to expuuge their records. They meet ttod
welcome us like brothers, and when a Presi
dent visits thttir aity N tbay know how-ttfbo-
have themselves. ’ *

consisting of three miscegens, (white females)

A Death Stbuogle with a Bhab.—A ter
rible encounter between an Indian and a
bear aecurred a few days ago up in the vicin
ity of Tomab, Wisconsin. Both the combat
ant were found a day or two since iff the si
lent embrace of deaib, and there is "probably
no living witness to ntter a description of
the horrible scene. The bear had been shot
m some vital part by the Indian; and the
latter, when found, lmd bis skull crashed as
if by- a powerful blow. The presumption is,
either that it was a close encounter—the shot
and the blow following in qnick succession;
or, the Indian, having shot the bear, ap
proached it in its death straggles, and re
ceived the blow which terminated his exist

Dbkadfcl Tbaoedy in Illinois.—A fearful tragedy
occurred in the town of Thompson, Carroll county.
Illinois, on Monday. Two. families, by the names of
Goddard and Schcnck, have been living during the
post summer in the same house, on m farm about a
mile from the village. Frequent quarrels have oc
curred between them. .The quarrels Anally culmi
nated bn Monday in a fierce personal encounter be
tween two mala diem bers of the families. Clubs and
similar weapons were -Xreely used, and nearly all the
members of the two families finally became engaged
in the conflict. Mrs. Goddard, having been struck
once or twice iu the melee, rushed into the house and
soon returned with a butcher knife, which .she imme
diately plunged into the breast of Miss Mary Lola,
] ailing her instantly. Mias Cole, the victim, was a
; oung lady about nineteen years of age, of a quiet and
inoffensive disposition, and was taking no part in.the
quarrel. The murderess is under surest, but, mani
fests no contrition for her crime.
