** great opening," lest the changes decreed by fuhiop
should not be becoming and graceful, bat to-day the
milliners arq prepared to answer all inquiries.
There has never been a greater variety of styles

colors, but the leading ones will be green and English

A tasteful evening hat is of white material, rwtai.a
shape, and trimmed with purple velvet. The strings

A pretty bonnet is of green velvet, trimmed with

lallof whitslsuh in: front. Another style is a white
bonnet, trimmed wtth a row of fringes across the
per part of the crowu, noada of m
white marabont across the hack
around the entire edge.
An elegant atyle is ia Mack velvet, trimmed with jet
and velvet, and made in a new shape. The front is
somewhat like that of the cottage style, with a wide
crown closely fiLingat the back of the head; and this
will probably ho the prevailing style later ip the sea
son. •; A hat of white marabout trimmed with pink
velvetia tasteful and attractive.
Most of the round hats are of turban shape, which
is becoming only to pretty and youthful faces. There
appears to be no w inter style in round hats for plain
faces, the genius of fashion having forgotten them.
The Marie Stewart style, for misses, is made of blue
royal velvet, with long bias strings; a white lies’barb
passing around the frunt and Jailing in long ends over
the blue strings; a cluster of crystal pansies forms the
inside trimming.
A hat known as " La Incroyable ” is of white royal
velvet, adorned with mauve flowers, with crystal pen
dants; a Velvet hand covered with lace forming the
inside trimjbing. It has wide tntuve • strides, and
narrow grace ribbon streamers of (he same abide, and
a white marabout fringe at the back.
A white silk—Catalan shape—ih trimmed with purple
flowers, with :a lade barb filling over pulrple velvet
string!; pendant purple flowers, having rings at
tached, to be worn in the ears, to match the outside
trimming. Thin ia a decided novelty.
£Ouo of the new' styles is curious, and cannot be
easily copied; indeed, at lirst it puzzled the milliners.
It consists of a single pieOi of white satin shirred
over a Catalan frame, with a purple velvet wreath or-

or iu wavy puffs. The frout hair is also worn in
smooth puffs, but this is not becoming to all style* of
features. There are several different modes of ar
ranging the waterfall to suit the fhney of the wearer.
It may be com{iosed of several small puffs, or two or
three, or two narrow bands crossing it, which gives it
the appearance of puffs. But coils were ruled out
some time since, and though occasionally we see one
defying the fiat of fashion, yet they are deciuedly out
of style.

When the small parasols, gorgeously decorated with
gold and jet, were introduced, it may have been
thought nothing prettier could be produced. But
parasols for the lall, following in the march of luxury,
have come out more fancifully adorned than at the
spring opening. They are small, lined with white, or.
some contrasting color, and ornamented with feathers
and marabouts. A black silk parasol has a row of
black and white feathers near tlie edge, and one not
lar from the top A purple silk is trimmed with white
marabout, and a blue silk with blue and white. They
are pretty, but expensive.
It is rather early to speak decidedly of the style* hr
cloaks to be worn later in the season. The opening
for cloaks, Ac., takes place later in October.
Hoop skists.
As we have Been those disgraceful and abominable
"tilting" hoops, we have mentally asked, how lnqg
will we be punished with them ? The question is new
answered, and the flat of fashion has gone forth for
their abolishment, and we breathe easier. The skirt
is narrowed around the bottom, for the fall and winter
season, from 4}£ and 3?{ to 3% and 3j{ yard*, with a
prospect of a still further reduction. Those fof riding,
house, and general use, vary from to 3 yards in
i r circumference at the bottom, with the same decreas
ing tendency.

[From the Indianopolis Journal, Sept tk]
During last week an animil was brought to this
city from the Northern part of this tfttate, the like of
w*hich was never before seen, we venture tr assert.
A year ago we learned from several reliable gentle
men who had seen it that such a monster was extant,
though rather too diminutive to attract ntudh notice,
and that, should it live to attain full size w<mld be a
marvel of ugliness and . ferocity. About Abe middlfi
of the present month its keepers concluded that it
had attained a growth sufficient to astonish any com
munity in which it should be exhibited, and it was
brought to this city to remain, as it was supposed,
till after the State Fair; but its extreme viciousness
rendered it uusafe and improper to allow it to stay
here, as well as dangerous to the crowds that will be
iu town the coining week. : ; ' f - ?
A gentlcmas who saw It while here describes ft ss
follow h: The general chai act eristics and features of
tbe horse are closely blended with those at tbs am iff
this strange and remarkable beast. The head and
neck are broad and heavy, giving it the flats dispo
sition of the buffalo rather than the quiet and docile
character of the ox, while a mane, reaching from the
forehead to the shoulder and sweeping to the Jmeeo,
add to Che general appearance at ft rod? y. The non*
are heavy at the base, but very short and polished
and pointed. The eye is dtill, but suggests things un
utterable—an expression of latent power and dfcflMrih ’
ness which the general appearance of tbe animal cost
firms. The muzzle is black and ugly, tne wide
nosuils argu.ng a large breathing apparatus and un
conquerable endurance. The jaw is heavy and prom
inent; the forehead full but rather square. The
depth of shoulder, is very .great; the fooetags ste>rt
and large; the Toot broad and deeply cflefk \ . S
But hero the bovihl) resemblance cease* alf&gether,
and the £equfno charactenstics begin. The body is

COTTON EBTIHi^rBn.
Bailkt’s Mills, Fla., Oct. 12,1866.
To Editor of News and Herald:
r noticed In your tri-weekly issue of the
8th inst., an article beaded “The Present;
Cottdn Crop,”' $nd .« statement subjoined
from the Columbus Enquirer, comparing the
receipts of cotton at different ports this year
with those of 1859. Savannah ia put down
at 18,300 bales for 1859, and 8,437 bales for
this year, which is not quite one half of tbe
receipts of 1859.
If my memory selves me correctly the
Atlantic and Gulf Road was not completed
as early as 1859, and consequently your city
did not receive cotton from that long line of
railroad. It wa9 completed I think in 1860.
Nor was the communication between Sa
vannah and Jackioivilic ah ireqaent and
regular aa it has been diving the-, present
yaer. These facts may not have been con
sidered by you, and may account for -the re
ceipts being somewhat larger in Savannah
I comparing better than other places with
those of 1859. - *

adopted instructing their Senator and Rep

deemed it the duty of the Legislature to stop
the collection of debts until the people can
meet in convention. They ask the co-opera
