FRIDAY UORSmO. OCTOBER It, 106.
The river flowed with the light on ita breast,
Anil the waves were eddying by;
And the round, red ran went down in the west.
When my love> loving llpe to my lips were prera
tinder the evening sky.
Now weeping alone by the river I atrey.
For my love has left me this many a day—
Left me lo droop and die.
As the river flowed then, the river flows stUI,
In ripple, and foOn and-teeny.
On by the church and round by the hill,
And under the sluice by the old burnt mill,
And out to the fading day;
Bnt I love it no more, for delight grows cold
Whenffhe song is sung end the taw is told,
And the heart it given away.
Oh! river, run far! Ob!‘ river, run that I *
Oh 1 Weeds, floatxm tethe eenl
For the sun has gehe Sown on nay beautiful peat,
And the hompthu like bread on the waters I cast.
Have drifted away like thee!’
So the dream it is fled, and the day it la done,
And my lips will murmur the name of one
Who will never come back to me.

Insurance.—A meeting of the Board of Under
waters has established the following tariff, showing a
slight advance on marine, and nearly 75 per cent
increase on lire risks, to take effect from the 1st of
October:
To Augircta by 1st class steamer 1 per cent
To Hawkinsville “ 44 ....! 1>* “
To FloridaportB : *. .1 “
To Charleston % “
To New York, Baltimore and Philadelphia,
by 1st class 9ail and steamer 1 44
To Boston by; 1st class steamer and sail...l>«
On cotton in first-class warehouses, Ac., 1 per cent,
for three months, risks being refused for a longer
period.
Much dissatisfaction is expressed at the enormous
increase of rates on cotton at presses. For instance,
where V„ was formerly charged for five days, % is
now required on what are termed third-class risks.
It is hoped that some reduction will be maAe by the
Board.in this city.
Cotton.—Our last Friday’s review reported the
market on Thursday advancing, under the receipt of
news from New York, and closing at 364£c. for mid
dlings.
Friday—Sales limited; holders firm at 36£c., buyers
holding back. New York market reported quiet.
Saturday—l&2c. advance in New York. 200 bales
changed hands on the basis of 37c. for middlings, the
market excited and closing firm.
Monday—Operations restricted; buyers unwilling
to meet the demands of holders, who were, under fa
vorable advices from New York, asking 39@40c. for
middlings. A few small lots were forced off at 38@
38)£c.
Tuesday—Holders disposed tc yield slightly on the
asking prices of yesterday, but no transactions. Cot
ton advanced in Liverpool, bat a sudden decline in
gold reported.
Wednesday—New York middlings offering freely at
38c, though few buyers are in the market. The offer
ing stock large and receipts heavy.
Thursday*-Tlie fl actuating condition of the New
* York market during the past week has completely un
settled the market here, and buyers have become very
cautious aud indisposed to operate,, eyen at a conces
sion of >2@lc. to. In fact, during the latter past of
the day, under reporte from New York of 9 farther
decline in gold, middlings were offering at Sic., with
few purchasers to be found.
In the afternoon, a decline in Liverpool of }£d.
was reported by private telegram*, which, if correct,
will seriously affect pricer.*
The offering stock is heavy, planters, as a general
rule, ordering tneir cotton on the market on arrival.
Sales for the week foot up about 500 bales. It should
be remarked that the scarcity of freight room has no
doubt restricted sales during the week past
The. Receipts—At all the ports continue to be light.
Planters seem more desirous of employing the fine
weather in gathering in the open cotton than in hur-
i’3*ing forward any portion of their crop. According
to Cornwall A Zerega’s Circular, the receipts at the
ports from 1st September to 5th October were 38,500
bales. Indndcd in this is a large proportion of old
cotton. ; . . '
The Receipts at thfo'port for the week are 4,722 bales
agaiusi 5,131 bales for the week previous. In the re
ceipts for these weeks have been several large lots of
. old cotton, which is explanatory of the slight falling
off to be noticed, which may be more marked for seve
ral weeks to come, until the new cotton begin* to make
up the deficiency.
The Crop.—Advices are more favorable, though
very little information is now furnished on the sub
ject. This fact alone would indicate better proepects
for a yield. Indeed, the propitious weather of the
past several weeks most prove highly advantageous,
though no definite results can be arrived at until the

Darien Market.
REPORTED BY JAMBS T. PATTERSON.
Darien, Oct. 16,18G6
Timber, both for Mill and shipping .purposes, ties
been in good demand since our last report. The supply
of the former has been acarcal^ equal to the demand,
particularly a first class article, which la scarce, and
would readily command $100912. The interior ciasi
now oh the market will only bring from $u to $9.
Shipping Timber of flrat Mass will bring readily from
$12 to $16. The prospect of Darien furnishing a
large portion of the Umber for the Brunswick mills
will give encouragement to the timber getters, ahd
when the rivers rue wa look for a supply equal to the
demand from both places.
