Tiie Atlanta firemen had a great time on
Wednesday over their new steam fire en
gine—a grand procession, oration, dinner,
poem and bail. The steamer on being sub
jected to a test threw water, on a level, two
hundred and twenty-five feet and two inches,
and to a perpendicular height which would
easily have deluged the roof of any building
in the city. Her working says the Era, was
retarded by ail who witnessed it as a mag-
nmoent success.
\ special dispatch from Baltimore to the
\yashington Chronicle announces that three
tt nusand “Boys in Blue” and eight hundred
men of the police force of the city have re
ported to the Mayor, armed and ready for
duty ; but it is now thought that there will
bo no trouble. -
It is reported that all the members of Gov-
Swann’s staff have resigned, and sided with
the Radicals.
Gen. Beaureoabd.—This distinguished
ei-Confederate General has addressed a let
ter to General Grant, applying for the resti
tution of his personal property retained by
the United States, against the terns of the
surrender of the arpties. Governor Parsons
had a long interview with the President on
the subject.
The Macon Telegraph announces the death
of Hon. Willard Boynton, Senator in our
State Legislature from the 12th District. Mr
Boynton was an active, upright aDd able le
gislator, and his presence will be much miss
ed by the body of which he was a member.
An election lias been ordered to fill the va
cancy.
Threatened Retaliation.—A large meet
ing of the senators and centres of the Fenians
of New York, held at Rochester, adopted a
resolution to the effect that if the Canadian
authorities inflict punishment on the Fenian
prisoners now in their hands, the most se
vere retaliatory measures will be adopted.
An organization, headed by several pro
iniuent merchants and professional men, is
forming at Louisville, Kentucky, to relieve
those portions of the Southern States de
vastated by the war. A committee was ap
pointed to draft a constitution and by-laws.
The Louisville Journal of the 15th says the
Presbyterian Synod of Kentucky has split at
Henderson, the Breckenridge party being
voted out by the Robinson party. All the
disseuting ministers withdrew, and came up
on the steamer Rose Hite Saturday morning.
Bishops Elliott, of Georgia; Green, of
Mississippi; Quintard, of Tennessee, and
Wilmer, of Alabama, are to serve at the con
secration of Bishop Wilmer, of Louisiana, on
the 7tli of November, in Christ’s Church,
New Orleans. Bishop Elliott will preach.

The Hon. Reverdy Johnson has given an
opinion that the tax of three cents a pound

to be issued to T. G. McFarland, of Georgia.

New Orleans, Oct 28.—Oen. Sheridan has ad-
dreased a letter to CoL Sedgwiok, commanding at
Brownsville, Instructing him to warn all adherents or
any party or pretandlng government of Mexico that
they will not be permitted to violate the laws between
the Juarez Liberal government of Mexico and the
United States. Them instructions will be enforced
against the adherents of the Imperial buccaneers, rep
resenting the so-called Imperial Government of Mex-
i, and alto against the Ortega. Santa Anna and other
factions.

The Baltimore Follce commissioners
Case.
Annapolis, Oct. 26.—Tha investigation of tlis charges
against the Baltimore Police Commissioned com
menced this morning. Governor Swann claims the
jurisdiction to try the case and pass judgment, and
will defer bia decision not latarthan Wednesday next.
He announced that If. In the course of the investiga
tion of the case, the gWllt or innocence of the Commis
sioners shall appear, ha will act instantly.

Oitowa, Oct. 26.—The Hotel Ducorvallo has been
engaged for the accommodation of troops. A part of
the 106th Royal Canada Regiment will he stationed
here this winter.
Toronto, Oct. 26.—B la rnmored here that an at
tempt will be made to rescue Lynch, the Feniau, who
was yesterday sentenced to death.
General McLawi Pardoned.
Augusta, Oct. 26.—Lafayette McLawa, whe was pre
vented from exercising the duties of the office of Clerk
of the Superior and Infarior Oourta on accouut of his
connection with the late Confederacy, received a par
don from the President to-day.

nied by General Great, had an interview with the
President this morning.

The Baltimore Trouble*—Proclamation
of the Governor.
Affairs have assumed so menacing an aspect that
Gov. Swann has daemad it necessary to issue the fol
lowing proclamation ■

Whereas, ft has come to the knowledge of the Ex
ecutive that military and other combinations are now
forming in ftie city of Baltimore for the purpose -of
obstructing and resisting the execution of the laws of
combinations are attempted to be organized in other
States, with the intention of Invading the soil of the
State of Maryland, to daprivs her citizens of their
just rights under the laws, and to control the people
of the State by violence and intimidation:

We give in this connection the following from the
Baltimore Son ;
Major-General Canby, commander of the military
department In which this city is included, reached
here yesterday morning from Washington. He at
one* proceeded to the City Hall, where he bad a
lengthy interview with Mayor Chapman and Messrs.
Hindes and Wood, the Police Commissioners. The
exact nature of the interview has not transpired, but
it is supposed to have had reference to the present
issue pending before the Governor of the State con
cerning the police board. The interview was strictly
private ua soon ss an dad. the General returned
to Washington. It will be aeen that at the instance of
the counsel for the complainants, the farther heating
of the case of the Comraiestonera has been postponed
until Friday next.
Gen. Hbnninos*n’b distillery at Rocketts, near
Richmond, has been seised by the Collector of Inter
nal Revsnna, for violation of the statute, and as a pre
liminary to an action In rent tor its forfeiture to the
United States. It seems that, through ignorance, he
failed to construct certain cisterns, which the law -re
quires.
Startling Story or Indian Murders.—A le-.ter
from Helens, Montana, says more Man three thous
and emigrants have been murdered by the Indians
this season. The whole routs through the territory is
strewn with fresh graves.
