’ (I j?’}’ tsiaaa in the Flames.
Yesterday a negro was .brought here from
-Cumberland Island, who had split open his
brother-in-law’s head with a hatchet, and
who then tried to killed his wife. He Was
placed in. the town jail until he ooold be i
taken to ICamden county. Last night at
about half-past 10 o’clock, the prisoner was
RT . heard calling out of one of his windows in
... the upper story. The jail is some distance
from any house, and as the negro had been
-Tjity insolent and noisy, no one took any do-
ntlce of his calls until he criedj“ fire.” By me
time two or three persons had assembled, Hie
fire was making its appearance through the
window of his room, and through the roof
immediately over his head. The jailor lives
j over a mile from the jail, and did not arrive
! until the roof and floors of the building had
j fallen in. -Axes .were brought and broken
. upon the door, timbers were used as battering
] rams, but the door, made of six-inch timbers
lily bonnet

an unusually large and heavy lock with
strong fastening inside, baffled all attempts
to breUAt down. In the meantime the ne
gro had fallen from his station at the window,
evidently suffocated by the thick volume of
smoke which issued from every opening in
therupper 9tory. *
The jail was constructed in 1838 of twelve-
inch pitch pine timber, covered with shingles,
so well seasoned that the fire flew through it
with frightful rapidity. There was no chance
of saving the prisoner.
There is no doubt but that the prisoner set
fire to the jail for the purpose of having the
doors open, when ho stood a very fair chance
of making his escape, as just opposite the jail
is a dense woods and thicket. The man
whose head was split open died this morn-

(From the National Intelligencer, Oct. 26.)
There has never been a more high-handed, out
rageous violation of every principle of constitutional
law than in the Beizure by the Kadicala la Congress
ot the legislative power, and the absolute ignoring of
the rights of representation inhering is the Southern
States. For the first time in the history of our gov
ernment, a party haa seized on the legislative branch
of the government, and excluded ten States from any
participation in the government. This is a violent,
lawlea., revolutionary act. And yet these men do thia
while the oath to support the Constitution la fresh
upon their lips. In all the history of our government,
nothing has ever been done by any party professing to
bo bound by the Constitution so Usgrantlyin violation
of lie provisions as this action of Congress. It la the
great usurpation. It ia (he leading Btep in the revolu
tionary movement. During the war, assumptions of
power by the Federal government were overlooked,
because the nation was in a death-struggle for exist
ence. But in time of profound peace, a mere party,
the Radioale, take possession of the Congress, and ex
ecute legislative functions in total disregard of the
rights of ten States. If this is not revolution, what is
revolution f
Tha falsity and insincerity of the excuse glvefifor
this violation of the 'Constitution, and overthrow, to
that extent, of the government—that it was necessary
to do this to keep traitors out of Congress—are mani
fest from the striking fact that they refused to admit
loyal men to their seats. Take, for instance, the case
of Judge Marvin, the Senator elect from the State of
Florida. No one questions hi- loyalty. Hd-opposed
secession and adhered to the United States during the
war. Yet this revolutionary party, who had asixed
upon Congress, never condescends ! even to consider
his oase. And to show their shameless disregard of
every principle of Justice no proposed amendment in
any degree affected the representation from Florida.
Florida was only entitled to one member, and no
amendment proposed to the Constitution would give
her leas. The admission ot Senator Marvin to his
Beat Interfered with no amendment proposed to the
Constitution. It is a simple and naked outrage. If
thia violent, illegal, and revolutionary action of the
Badical party, in excluding ten States from any share
in the government, shall »e permanently sustained by
the American people, then the constitutional era will
be at an end, and we shall enter upon the revolu
tionary period of our government. Unless the people
ehall ultimately come to the r«aoue, to preserve the
great republican system of government which they
mneritea uuu. u,nir noble ancestors, and drive thia
Incendiary band of unscrupulous ana Jn_
tioniBta from the seats of power, we will have nothing
of the beauteous features of freedom left in thia conn-
try but an odious likeness of that chautio and chronic
anarchy which haa made poor, unhappy Mexico the
pity and contempt of the world and the derision of
history.
