FRIDAY MORNING. NOVEMBER 9,186S.
The Broke a hate.
£ln- following exquisite little gem we take pleasure
in coin mending to the lovers of the beautiful. It is
from the gifted pen of Mrs. Sophia Bolling, of Mont
gomery, A!».—-V. 0. Commercial.
My lie irt is like the broken lute.
Unstrung, and Idly cast away;
Hiose thrilling cords are still and mute,
That once inspired the mfhstrel’s lav.
And yet, some hand, with gentle care,
May plai e again each dulcet string,
And breathe, once more, sweet music there.
And to its melting cadence sing.
Still on the lutes's Worn frame may live,
Of melody, the sweetest token;
But oh! the heart can never give,-
One happy note when it is broken.
Ill G-eneral.
—Sixty years ago there was hardly a
craft larger than an Indian canoe on the
great Western lakes. In 1841 the lake trade
amounted to $03,000,000, in 1851 to $300,-
000,000. in 1861 to $350,000,000, and it bids
fair in 1871 to reach the enormous sum oi
$1,000,000,000.
—Tlie captain of the steamer Louise and
Fanny states that the ordnance stores at
Hilton Head are being rapidly removed
North—the quartermasters have all gone,
the work going on night and day. Fort
Willis is being dismantled.
—It is stated a3 a singular fact that the
counterteiting of the Uuited States currency
has reached such perfection that the counter
f.it currency is regularly redeemed at the
Treasury, cancelled and destroyed with the
rest of the mutilated currency.
—A young lady residing in Lansing, Mich
was stung ou the forehead by a honey bee in
August iMt. v ' The poison of the sting caused
a sevjsr^welling, aDd so prostrated her net-
vons system as to confine her lo her bed, and
eventually caused her death on the lGlli ult.
—The uegro barber of the Ottawa House,
Montreal, absconded last week, taking with
him front $10,000 to $14,000 in borrowed
money, $700 in jewelry and $800 in clothing.
He was traced into Vermont by cue ol
bis creditors, but the sharp thief’s wile had
taken another track with all the plunder in
her possession.
—It is announced in the Virginia papers
that the colony of Poles heretofore mentioned
have reached their destination, in Spottsyl-
vania county. They are to be followed by
two thousand of their countrymen, and will
no doubt be a most valuable acquisition to
tbe particular section where they locate.

Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed
