Personal.—We had the pleasure, yerterdty, of
taking by the hand 4 our worthy friend Mr. Thomas
Simmons, of Monticello, Fla., who vtalts »f»to city aa
the agent of the Tallahassee Floridian vmd the Monti*
cello Friend, to solicit subscriptions and advertise
ments. The first named paper is too widely and fa
vorably known in this community to need any special
commendation from ns; and with regard to theFriand,
we take pleasure in stating that it is one of the most
sprightly and interesting weeklies published in Flo
rida. Both of these papers are published in the
eery centre of the middle section of the State, and
our business men cannot find better mediums by
which to communicate with that enlightened aid
wealthy portion of tbe Peninsula State
It gives us great pleasure to commend the agent,
Mr. Simmons, to the friendly civilities, and the ob
ject of his visit to the favorable consideration of onr
merchants, with the assurance that he is a gentleman
of unexceptionable character and fine business intel
ligence. ^
German Sociable.—This affair, which caipe off on
Thursday night last at St. Andrew’s Hall, though the
attendance was small, was pleasant, and, aa its name
suggested, sociable. After dancing to the flnA mn^
of the orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. Meyer,
until about 12 o’clock, the company repaired to the
supper room, and their appetites, which had been
sharpened by their vigorous exercise, were soon ap
peased by tbe sumptuous fare spread out by Mr.
Schwartz, of the Savannah Hotel. Our public funo
tionarics, as well as brothers of the quill, were well
represented, and appeared to enjoy themselves. After
supper dancing was resumed, and kept up to a late, or
rather early, hour.
The Illustrated Weeklies.—We have received
from Bankin A Brother, Bryan street, one door east
of Bull, copies of the New York Ledger, Street A
Smith’s Literary Album, and the New York Spanish
paper, La Chronica. The Album is well filled with
interesting reading matter and handsomely illustrated
with fine wood engravings. It is free from the scur
rilous and indecent caricatures and libels on the
South which make so conspicuous a feature of the
weekly of the New York Udrpies.
House and Sign Painting.—Attention is invited to
the advertisement of Messrs. Murphy A Clark, house,
sign, ship and steamboat painter**, in another column.
Messrs. M- A C. are prepared to execute painting,
gilding, graining, marbling and glazing of every kind,
with promptness and in a superior manner. The
neatness and good taste displayed in tin ir work Is a
Sufficient recommendation, and will ensure then: a
liberal share of the public patronage.

At least one great element of beauty is within the
reach of nearly every one. Wc mean a clear, healthy
complexion Paints and powders never can give this.
The most they can do is to cover up defects; and that
so imperfectly as to deceive no one. Perfect health
of body, and especially a proper action of the secre
tive system—embracing the stomach, liver, bowels
and kidneys, is essential to any real beauty of com
plexion. And this can be secured by the use of Mars-
den’s Vegetable Sanative Pills, which act mildly, but
surely, upou these all-important organs.
Nothing Hurtful About Them.—While so many
articles of daily use have become so adulterated that
one hardly dares believe anything pure, It is satfrfsc-
tory to kuow that the Soaps with which we purify our
selves or onr clothing may bo relied upon as being

The nature of its components is the guarantee o'
ts harralessness. It consists of the stimulating prin
ciple of sound Rye, meoicated with the finest tonic,

In the factory at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a gy«-
tem of inspection far more thorough than tha:
adopted by Government authority, as a test of tin
quality of tlie great staples of life, la rigorously pra<-
tlaed. Every barrel of the cereal stimulant whlei
forms tbe basis of tbe Bitters is ascertained to tie ab
solutely pure before it is received into the manufa' -
turlng department, and every leaf and fibre or the
medicating ingredients scrutinized before the proves
of infusion commences. Such Is the enormous ca
pacity of the tanks in which tlie Bit' ere are prepare'
that the proprietors are enabled to keep a large -tori
on hand, and to suppiy the domestic and fure'gt

Hostetter’s
STOMACH BITTERS
Are the only Medicinal Tonic in the World of which
that fluid Is the stimulating ingredient.
To Dyspeptic Sufferers.
Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed
all the varieties of indigestion. Its symptoms are
so various, and differ so much in different individual:-
that it is almost impossible to classify them. In fact
some of them are utterly Indescribable. It may lx
safely asserted, however, that half tbe diseases oi
mankind spring from a disordered condition of the
stomach; aud that the other half, whatever tlieii
origin, react upon that sensitive and important or-
gan. Among the ordinary Indications of Dys; epsia
are flatulence,a bloated and fall feeling about tli
stomach and abdomen immediately after eating, a
gnawing sensation or a sense of hollowness at tin-
pit of the stomach between meals, a heavy dull lccl-
ing in the head, feebio or unsteady appetite, occa
sional nausea, restlessness daring, ■ ht and a weary,
anrefreshed feeling on rising loth- orning, pulpits
tlon of the heart, depression 3 1ml, sometimes
amounting to monomania, los .c noiy, confu
sion of thought, sour stomach, with talsing of food,
and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness ot
eye, pain in the diaphragm, feebleness and disincli
nation for exertion, and sometimes emaciation and a
corpse-like pallor. These are a few of the direct
signs of Dyspepsia, but as lt is generally complicat;.
with specific affections of the bowels, the liver an"
the Leives, Us victims have many additional tormeut.-
whlch are technically attributed to other causes.
The beat advice that can be given to any one wh
ites the slightest predisposltKSR to Dyspepsia, is to for
tlfy his or her digestive organs by the daily use of
Hostetter’s Bitters.
The aisease proceeds from a lack of vigor In tin
stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tom
and renovate that organ. If tlie gastric apparatus ir
in good working order; and can - perrcrtly dissoiw
and thoroughly assimilate the food submitted to itt
operation, there will be no Dyspepsia. If it cannot
do this, it requires reinforcement, and the best of el
reinforcing agents should be forthwith resorted to.
The stomach Is the commissariat nf tlie system. 1
upplies the elements of lire to the whole body, it
it is prepared the material of blood, muscle, bom
and fibre, and if It falls to purvey that material it
quantity, and of aproper kind, the whole body ent
ire, and with it the mental faculties. Therefore pro
tect the commissariat department. Don’t let the en
emy obtain possessibn of it. It is eas'er to prevent
disease from getting into an organ than to expel it
after lt becomes a chronic fixture. Consider Un
first indicat' in of uneasiness in the stomach as a
sign that Dyspepsia is preparing to attack, and hair
it at once with the GREAT RKPKLLANT.
But if it is too late to .prevent, remember that it It
not too late to care. It la believed that there is tic
case of Chronic Indigestion that can withstand tue
remedial operation of
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters.
This belief la grounded on twelveyeais’ experien e
of the efficacy of the preparation. The first instan. e
of its failure to give relief is yet unchronicled. If it
ever had failed, the volnminoos correspondence au
dressed to the proprietors from all parts of tbe Unite*
States and Sooth America, would at least include
one letter expressing dissatisfaction. But no, there
Is i'or one. The testimony, extending over a period
of more than a dozen years. Is all of the approving
tenor Certainly this is a sufficient warrant fot
claiming that the BITTERS are a SPECIFIC FOR
INDIGESTION IN ALL ITS VARIETIES.
Hostetter’s Bitters
{AS A
Hou.seh.old Medicine,
It la a great fallacy to suppose that the nauseous
ness of a medicine ia any proof of its value aa a res
tonttve. The troth la, that IT the palate revolts
against a remedy, lt cannot do much good.
HOSTETTER’S BITTERS
Are not nuplearent to the tatoe, and always soothe
and quiet, instead of irritating the stomach. Indeed
they are the beat known preventative of and cure for
nanaea. Their usefulnesa aaa family specific can
scarcely be overrated. For sickness at the stomach,
sudden spasms, wind colic, hysterica, nervous head
ache lassitude, low spirits, and the thousand and
one little ailments that are continually ooourt ing in
every family, there is nothing comparable to them. A
whole medicine chest fall of tinctures, essences, pow
ders, snd pills, la not worth a single bottle of the
BITTERS In such cases.

IMPORTANT NEW INVENTION.
tAUSTRALIAN CRYSTAL
SINGLE-AND DOUBLE VISION
SPECTACLES
THE ONLY PERFECT LESS IK EX-
ISTKftCE.
Superior to any other in use—constructed in accord
ance with i he science and philosophy of nature in the
peculiar form of a
Concavo-Convex Ellipsis.
Admirably adapted to tho Organ of Sight, and per
fectly natural to the eye. affordwg altogether tbe best
artificial help to the human vision ever invented'.
Sold ouly by the Profeasor 01 Optics aud Spectacle
Manufacture r.
THE ADVANTAGES'
Of these Spectacles over all others, are:
1st—Tlie ouly true Lens known, being
perfectly free from chromatic light, so well known to
be the cause ol injury to the vision, and which makes
the change from Sp ctaclcs to Glasses oh stronger
powers so often required, while both near and distant
objects are seen with equal facility throagh tbe same
2d.—Can be worn with perfect CMC For
any length of time at one sitting, giving astonishing
clearness of vision, particularly by candle or other ar
tificial light—comlort to the spectacle wearer hitherto
unknown.
3d—When the eyes ache or palm throwgh
the action of a bright light, such aa is reflected from
snow, sunny weather, white paper, and in reading,
writing or sewing,or vivid colored bodies, these lenses,
by soli*ning the rays, effect a most agreeable sensation
and give great relief.
4th.—lit all nervous affections off the
eye causing dull and startling pains in the eye-ball or
temple, appearance of luminous and dark spots in the
atmosphere, aching or feeling like sand in the eye, the
disturbed nerves are quieted aud soothed. ’
5th.—Ground by peculiar machinery,
got up at great cost, mathematically calculated ex
pressly for tho manufacture of this lens, so as to pro
duce it with the true spherical accuracy, and its focus
is at the exact centre, a point of vital importance, and
which no other lens possesses.
6th.—Proof off superiority over the old
kind of Spectacles. They are used exclusively at all
the hospitals lor diseases of the eye, in Berlin. Prus
sia, and elsewhere.
Testimony of RecommemlatiGiis
From Medical gentlemen. Professors of the highest
Opthalmic talent in Savannah, Ga., and in the Union.
Savajcmah, Ga.. OcL 26,1866.
I have examined a great variety of Glasses manu
factured by Professor M. Berhhabdt, and in justice
to the Professor must say, that his Glasses are oi a
superior quality, adapted to meet the wants ot almost
every eye, where the vision is in any way imperfect.
The Professor selected tor me a pair of bis Australian
Crystal Glasses which are of a very euperior quality
and workmanship, rendering vision very distinct,
and suiting my eyes better than any I have ever tried.
R. D. Arnold, M. D.
I fully concur with the above.
J. 9. Sullivan, M. D.
Savannah, Ga., OcL 26, 1866.
We have examined the Lenses of Prof. Bkrnhakdt,
and consider them superior to any we have seen.
They are admirably adapted not only to improve tbe
imperfections of impaired sight, but to relieve the
weariness of vision which constant study produces.
Many of the Glasses are of new and ingenious contriv
ance. We cordially recommend the Professor to all
those who require scientific optical assistance.

1 have examined the Lenses of Professor M. Bern
hardt with great satisfaction. He has furnished me
with a pair through which 1 am able to see with an
ease and distinctness far beyond any which I have
heretofore used.
With much confidence I recommend him to those
who may need such artificial aid to their eyes.
Rev. I. 9. K. Axson,
Pastor Iudepeud. Pres. Church.
Testimonials similar to the above may be seen at

Many years of public practice and study in the
hospitals in Europe, adjusting spectacles to patients
under every aspect of defective vision, as well as ex
perience in cn extensive, long-established business in
his optical stores, both here and in Europe, Professor
Bernhardt considers it a sufficient guarantee of hi*
ability, to apply such glasses as are best calculated for
the assistance or recovery of imperfect sight.
