EVERY VARIETY OF
It will be seen by my report to-day that a
bill has been introduced to establish the office
of State geologist. This ia an important
move, and should the bill become a law, and
4>he State be do fortunate as to secure the ser
vices of a competent and energetic officer,
great good will most certainly inure to the
owners of mineral lands, and incidentally to
the whole State. Recent sales of mineral
lands in Cherokee, Georgia, have developed
“^ytbe fact that the original o.wners of these
lands have lost immense same because they
did not know the value of their property. In
several instances recently lots have been sold
for more thousands than their former owners
received hundreds. There is uow a great
mania among Northern capitalists to lutrest
their surplus greenbacks in mining and man
ufacturing projects all over the South, and in
uo one State are there greater inducements
held out or more tempting iuvestments pre-
tban in Georgia. If a thorough geo
logical survey were made, it would flot only
protect those who wish to invest, but ft
would also enable our people who own val
uable mineral lands to secure for them
something approximating to their real value.
By all means let us have the geologist.
I enclose the schedule of valuations pro
posed to be put upon contracts based ou
Confederate * currency by the bill introduced
by Mr. Maddox, of Fultoo. This table pro
poses to fix the rate of Confederate money as
compared with gold at the several dates
named.
