Theatre—Complimentary Benefit to Miss
Thompson.
The play of the Stranger was performed last night
a very good house, and in the principal characters
probably never better performed on our stage.
‘ m Thompson invested the part of Mrs. Haller with
a almost painful interest, and especially in the lust
V in W bich She was well nustainod by Mr. Langdon,
icKitlie audience in absorbed attention, the prevall-
’f.leuce being only broken by occasional involun-
Jv ami subdued demonstrations of applause. Twice
th«- fall of tbe curtain she was called to the front.
y r . Laugdon’s Stranger was a fine performance
throughout. Mr. Lowry’s personation of France* was
urv good, while Mr. Pratt, as Solomon, and Mr. Ben
. u. as Peter, though they may have taken some liber
ty with the author, contributed by their irresistible
id^ .r to enliven the boiubreneas of the ploce. The.
tjrt of old Tobias was most admirably performed by
iir Moore. Miss Mayhew’s ConnteBB and Mias Ma-
.,n « Charlotte wore very good perfonnancei.

Ue intensely interesting drama of “Camille,” which
affords the most ample scope for the display of Miss

perUps, one of her most successful roles. As shown
a lie former representation of the piece, she will
se well sustained by the company in all the principal
parts, and as the benefit is given as a testimonial of

Wilton's Photograph Gallery.
We have recently had the opportunity of inspecting
the picture* in the Photograph Establishment of Mr.
N. Wilson, southeast corner of Whitaker and
Broughton streets. Ho has a very fine assortment,
mostly samples of orders ho has filled, and it includes
picture* of some of our most prominent citizens and
members of their families. A speciality with him is
colored photographs—the original pictures taken by
experienced and competent operators, and colored by
the moat ekilful artists, including an accomplished
portrait painter. He has just received a new invoice
of fine gilt, black walnut and other picture frames,
from life size down to miniature.
His stereoscopic views of Bonaventura, Laurel
Grove and Savannah are well worth examination, and,
together, form an interesting and valuanlo collection
Ambrotypea, daguerreotypes, or any style of pic
ture can be sent to him, and reproduced to almost
perfection, in any size, colored or plain.

Violating Ordinance*.
There is an ordinance of tho city which provides
that oarts aud wagons cannot go through the lanes of
tho city for more than one square, aud that only for
five purpose of taking or delivering a load. This law
Is constantly being violated, anil lately the bnperin-
dent of Streets aud Lanes has made a complaint
that it is Impossible to keep the lanes in proper condi
tion, owing to their being constantly used.
The police officers have had strict Instructions to
put a stop to it* and yesterday morning several^ drivers
were before His Honor, Mayor Audoraon.
Washington Sumpter, Sam Johnson. A. Nichols and
Nelson Ammond were all charged with this offence,
but claimed ignorance of the law. His Honor
remarked that it was impossible for the Street Com
missioners to keep tlm lanes in condition if they wero
constantly used. Ho fined the defendants each two
dollars, and ordered that they pay the cost of feeding
their animals at tbe barracks.
Mayor** Court.
&j*iitiou to the oasos of violation of ordinances
fcf Te Hite Honor, E. O. Anderson, Mayor, there were
»c?ci»le of cases of larceny,
fl’ra. Harrington, white, and A. Johnson, colored,
fere charged with stealing three boxes of raisins
::om the steamship Flambeau. The wharf clbrk
•s i ho found the boxes in the possession of tbe
:c*ro. and upon asking him where he got them the
«aid Harrington had given them to him. He
then had both parties arrested. The witness said the
fioies had been taken from tbe Flambeau and were
marked in care of tho Central Railroad Company.
His nonor turned the caso over to the County Coujt,
ifldon a hearing before Justice Staley the parties were
-onuuitted to jail to await trial.
iirc.cn Morgan, a negro, was charged with stealing *
oalc of cotton from the steamer Two Boys. An offloer
i the boat said that one of the hands called his atten-
oon to the bale, which had been thrown oyorboard,
uni was floating down stream. The only onoontho
Hut at tho time was the defendant, and he was seen
:o come off with a cotton hook in his hand. Tho case
.-as turned over to the County Court for prosecution.
Wo. Firkcr, watchman on a ship the other side
of the river, was arraigned on the charge of being
drunk aud disorderly. He did not deny the faot, say
ing he was tight. Fined three dollars.
A man named McGovern was arraigned on the seme
charge. The officer said that, after taking tho defend
ant into custody, he was disorderly, and finally laid
down in tho street, when he had to procure a wheel
barrow. He was fined five dollars and costs.
Catholic Fair.—Sue the advertisement in another
column announcing that a Fair for tho benefit of the
orphans of the Catholic Asylum will bo held on Mon
day next. We have no doubt it will be largoly at
tended by all classes of our people, who feel a deep
Interest in the success of an institution that has ac
complished so much in behalf of tho orphans of this
city.
Home Manufacture*)
IVf h»T« before noticed the superior article o f fam
ily soap manufactured by the Georgia Chemical
ifiirks, in Ibis city. We have now used it for family
purposes some two months, and are prepared to pro-
moucc it equal to tho best, snd superior to much of
the Northern soap brought to this market. When wo
consider the immense amount ol monev which has
iiCretoforo gone abrosd for the purchase of an articlo
which enters into tho consumption or every family
in i which is now manufactured in our midst, snd
wold at competing prices with the Northern man-
aUctnrer, too much praise cannot be awarded to the
enterprising men at the head of the Georgia Chemical
Association. They have demonstrated the practica
bility of self-dependence in the production of at least
»»trticle of prime necessity, for which we have here
tofore been dependent on the North; and while they
temish an article of equal or superior quality, at the
«me price of the Northern articlo, they have a juet
claim on the patronage of our public.
(To understand from Messrs. Purse k Thomas,
»cents for the Company, that their present arrange
ments are such as to enable them to produce an un
limited supply of their superior family soap.
Hoot* and Shoes.
The attention of our readers, especially of the ladies,
is invited to the advertisement of Messrs. Xebeau &
Phillips, wholesale and retail dealers in boote and
shoes, corner ot Bull and Broughton streets. Ill »d-
Jition to their general stock, embracing overy article
in their line, they have Jnst received from the best
manufacturing establishments in Philadelphia a large
.apply of ladles’ boots and shoes of superior quslity
and of the latest style. Mr. Tebcau. the senior
partner, having been long engaged in the shoo busi
ness in this city, is well acquainted with the require-
meats of onr market, and as their stock Is purchased
under his personal inspection, the article, offered by
them may be relied upon. Mr. Phillips, the Junior
partner, is well and favorably known to our comma-
nity. As Lieutenant Colonel of the 47th O^gia

abled by a severe wound, from the effects of which he
will perhaps never ontirely recover. Thetr presen

Cottoh.—Onr market daring tbe first pert of tbe
current week seemed to declino steadily, and sales
were made as low as 30Xc. for middlings (Liverpool)
* On Wednesday, however, on tbe receipt of better
advices, a reaction took place, and prices rallied some
what. To-day, with the repetition of better news,
both from New York and Liverpool, this advance
more than sustained, and 31X@32c. was asked for
middlings. Tbe market, howevor, is very irregular,
both as regards tbe prices asked aud tbe offers made,
though considerable animation seemed to exist,
must be observed that buyors do not seem disposed
generally to concedo tbe advance demanded, and that
the difficulty of negotiating, owing to the scarcity of
currency, still further retards tbe movement of the
staple.
Rkckipts—At tills port, for the week ending Doc.
13th show a more decided increase than has yet been
observed, being 7.054 bales, against 4,991 for last
week, au excess of 3,063. On the contrary, at New
Orleans tho receipts for week ending the 8lh wore
36,299, against 28,836 for previous week—an actual de
crease of 3,637 bales.
EXPOBTS—Are this week 3,000 bales coastwise,
is gratifying toseo it stated by our late New York cir
culars that tho indications of an increased foreign ex
port are very apparent.
Wo think it right to call the attention of our mer
chants to the confusion existing as to the classification
of cotton in this market In New Orleans the samo
was the case, whereupon many factors and others ad
dressed a memorial to tho Chamber of Commerce of
that city, recommending that tho Liverpool classifica
tion should be generally adopted, as tending to put an
end to tbe errors, misconceptions and dissatisfaction
that existod without thia uniformity. The memorial
was favorably considered, and the suggestion adopted,
Cannot someting be doDe hers, where the samo ir
regularity prevails 7 *
