The Empit Cradle—There is a Whole
volume of poetry in the tallowing little
sketch, which we fiud iu the last number of
Miss Barbel’s Weekly: . „
’We met John on the stairs Hewascar-
ryW an old cradle to be stowed away among
what he termed “plunder," in the lumber
room. One rocker was gone, and the wick
er-work of the sides broken; it was an old
willowy affair, but we could not refraio fiom
casting a look into its empty depths.
“Gone!” we said dreamily, ‘all gone. —
What golden heads once pillowed bere-
heads on which the curls grew moist in
slumber, and the cheeks and lips flashed the
hue of rose leaves. When sleep broke, the
silken-fringed lids opened heavily from the
slumbrous eye; smiles flitted like sunbeams
over the face; the white fist was thrust into
the mouth, when mamma lifted the mnslin
and peeped in to see if the baby was awake!
The little feet began to kick, out of pure de
licti! and kicked on until both of the tiny
red shoes were landed at the foot of the
cradle Where are those heads now ? Some
that were embrowned by vigorous manhood
are sleeping on battlefields; some are
bleached with time and cares, and the feet
have grown sore and weary on the rough
paths of life-
Perhaps some little one, once tenderly
rocked here, is sleeping in the coffin. Over
it grows the heartsease, and vigorous bo?,and
whit^candy tuft, and the starry jessamine.
The biue bird flutters its bright wings thro -
the willow houghs, and the cool summer
wind whispers to the green leaves and grass
blades'on the grave. What of? Perhapsol
its immoriu iiv. bleep on little dreamless
one? - “Of such is the kingdom of Heaven!”
m California, Flour and Wheat.—The last
mail steamer arriving in New York from the
Isthmus brought a large consignment of Cal
ifornia flour and wheut for that city. They
are said to he of excellent quality, and
among, dealers in those articles have caused
some stir. This is said to bo the first con
signment of flour ever brought to the Atlatr-
tic States from California, and the first
wheat brought by steamer.
We some time ago noticed the fact of or
ders for flour and wheat being transmitted
by the cable and overland telegraph from
London to San Francisco, and judge from
this that the Pacific slope is supplying
. England with some of its breadstutt's, al
though separated from that country by near
ly one-third of tho circumference of the
earth.
A colored man. had stuck to rebel Gen
eral Hood through thick and thin, and was
in hopes of being nble to march into Nash-
viiie and pay his respects to a lady of the
upper-crust of the colored society, when he
discovered that the besieging army was re
treating, determined to break through the
lines, and throw himself upon the mercy of
the Yankees. He presented himself to Gen.
Thomas, hat iu hand, when the following
dialogue ensued:
■t“ Where are you worn ? ”
■'■“I’se jest from the army, sab,”,
“ What army ? ”
“ Mr. Hood's army, sah.”
“Where is Mr. Hood now ?";
“ He's leavin’, sah; he’s leavin’.”
“ Ah ! I thought Mr. Hood, as you call
him, was coming Into Nashville.”
“No, sah; Mr. Hood thinks he can’t do
hisself justice in Nashville."
