THE COURTS.
Mayor’s Court—May 7.
Ills Honob, E. C. Andebson, Presiding.
John Galvin was charged with peddling soap with
out u license. It appoared that John was toting a
box of soap about the city, which he was offering lor
sale at twenty cents a bar, but no sale was proved, aud
therefore lie was only required to pay a fine of five
dollars.
Pa , a genteel looking man from the Emerald Isle,
was found In Broughton street with his legs entangled
iu bis drawers, aud was invited to the guard-house by
a policeman, where he was disentangled. He replen
ished the city treasury to the amount of three dol
lars.
Walley Black, a black man, was charged with
cursing and abusing one Ella Crowell, an inmate of a
huuso of 111-fame. Upon a ventilation of this case it
turned out that Ella did all the cursing and abusing
bi-rself, and hence Black was discharged and Ella re
ifiurod to pay the costs.
Oeo ge Knight, a freedman, was charged with dis
orderly conduct, aud also with resisting and striking
■i Police officer while iu the discharge of hlS dutr.
It appeared from the evidence in this case that the
prisoner, with two other rreedmen, went to a freed-
uu u's ball aud behaved in a very disorderly manner,
tudrly Interrupting the dancers and buying glasses
ot soda water aud throwing on the colored fair sex,
Ac., when a policeman Invited them to leave the
premises, which they flatly refused to do. aud defied
tbu policeman to put them out. When be attempted'
to arrest the prisoner he resisted and struck him,
aud fired a pistol, the shot dangerously wounding
Frances Hunter, a colored woman. The prisoner,
with oae other of the parly, was arreBted. The other
succeeded iu making his escape. The prisoner was
requi-ed to pay a fine of fifty dollars, or bo oonflnod
tu jail thirty days, in each case.
Albert Sbelman, colored, one of the party above
mentioned, was required to pay a fine of twenty
dollars or go to jail sixty days. He elected to pay over
the greenbacks.
The Cuse of the Savannah Fire Com-
puny vs. J. F. Waring and the City
Council of Savannah.
Motion to dissolve injunction lo restrain defendant*
from enforc ug an ordinance to re-organize the
Fov Department of the CUg of Savannah.
This case came on to be heard before Hon. Wm. B.
Firming, Judge of the Superior Court, at Chambers,
ou yesterday.
It is claimed by the counsel for the plaintiff that the
>ct of the Legislature of the State of Georgia, of 1834,/
treating tho Savannah Fire Company, and the aet of
hit, amendatory thereto, invested said company with
certain privileges, among which was the right to elect
‘Chief Fireman, who should have supreme control
i t ‘U the fire companies in the city of Savannah at all
ties iu said city, and that the City Connell ia not in-
vrsted with any legal power to paas any ordluance
d-ptiving them of that privilege, or any other privi-
le S c granted to them in said act of incorporation, or
tke act amondatory thereto. —•
0u the other hand It is claimed that the set luoor
poratlug the clcy of Savannah invests the City Coun
cil with full power and authority to control the entire
firs Department of the elty, and that the sets re-
Lrred to, incorporating tho Savannah Fire Company,
do uot in any wise divest the City Council of such
control aud supervision, but merely confer power on
«»td Company to raise and oontrol funds for benevo
lent purposes; aud that the City Connell have ample
,e gal authority to paas an ordinance making pro-
vUluoa tor the appointment of au officer who shall
control of all the fire companies and all the fire
“pparatus during the progress of Urea ia the city.
There are other questions involved, but we under-
‘ttod the above to be the controlling point in the
i»W.
After hearing the opening argument of General
Jteksou for the plaintiff, and after Mr. Lloyd had oosn-
htthced bis argument for defendants, the further
hearing of the oause was postponed until this morn-
lD « at 11 o’clock. Jaokson and Hartridge for plaintiff
Harden and Lloyd for defendants.

CITY INTELLIGENCE.
■DUIIfi 09 THE BTKAMTCQ HOPS
AT DARIEN.
Lois, $10,000—Vo Insurance.
From OapL James A. Clubb, of the steam tug Hope,
we learn that the boat was discovered to be on fire
while lying at her wharf at Darien on Sunday morn,
lag last, between 1 and lo’olock. All efforts to save
her were unavailing, and she was sntirely destroyed.
The boat boat was owned by Carl Epping, Esq., end
was need for towing between Darien sad Brunswick.
On Saturday afternoon she arrived at Darien, and had
lain in port some twelve hours. From the appearance
of the decks, which were covered with turpentine,
there is not the least doubt the Are was caused by an
lnoendlary.
The Hope was a good, substantial tug, and was val-
asd at about ten thousand dollars, upon which we
leant there was no Insurance.
Shooting Affair.
Monday night about 12 o’clock, a disturbance occur
red at a oolored ball, at the oorner of Weat Broad and
Broughton street lane, oaused by two policemen at
tempting to eject three colored men, who, being
drunk, were oansing great disturbance, throwing
soda water over the women at the table, and acting
otherwise in a very disgraceful manner. The police,
apprehending a difficulty, made several ineffectual
peaeeable attempts to break the ball up, but finding
the disturber! stubborn, they attempted to put them
out, at the request of the women, when one of the
police, Mr. J. Sullivan, was pounced upon by thrqe
negroes, struck on the head several times and almost
borne to the ground.
At this stage of the proceedings, policeman James
Oolloglay, whose intrepid daring and courage has
heretofore been highly complimented by the Mayor
and Chief of Police, and whose conduct in the dis
charge ot hie duty has been that of a man whole
honor and faithfulness has led him to ignore the idea
of personal sr.toty, rushed to the scene, and attempted
to rescue the overpowered policeman. During the ex
citement which prevailed, a colored man named Geo.
Knight fired a pistol at Golloglay, which, fortunately,
missed him, but struck a colored woman named
Francea,Hunter, the ball entering her mouth, passing
upwards through her head, and coming out above the
right ear. Golloglay immediately fifed at Knight,
who started to run, when bo fired two more shots at
him without taking effect. Knight eventually man
aged to escape. Lieutenant Howard and Sergeant
Leonard, hearing of the affair, started in pnrauit ot
Knight, and after a vigorous search, succeeded in ar
resting him yesterday in orning at an early hour.
The uufortonate woman was conveyed, bleeding
badly, to her residence on the corner of Fahm and
Harris streets. Bnt little hopes are entertained of
her recovery.
Under the heed of the Mayor’s Court wilt be found
the trial and sentence of the parties implicated.
U#ke Savannah Street Railway.
It It announced in oar advertising columns this
morning that Andrew Low aud otLers have accepted
from the city the charter of the Savannah Street
Railway Company, and will open the books for sub-
sorlption on the 20th Inst.
We are truly gratified to learn that the difficulties
iu the way of accomplishing this Important
enterprise have been removed, and that
many of our leading and most responsible
cittsen* have taken it iu band with the deter
mination to prosecute the work vigorously. With
this enterprise completed, there is no good reason
wbyonr beautiful city should uot widen her borders
rapidly, and the conveniences and enjoyments of our
people be greatly multiplied. We have long been aston
ished at the apparent apathy and indifference with
which this improvement, so full of promise, has been
viewed by our citizens. While other cities, with less
population and with only half the commerce, have
completed similar works to induce population and
we .1th to come among them, Savannah has failed
until now to move iu a matter of the highest impor
tance to her growth and prosperity.
It would be reflecting upon tho intelligence of our
people to undertake to demonstrate to them that the
purchase of stock in this railroad will be a good in
vestment. Of this they are already satisfied, aud are
only awaiting the opportunity now presented to in
vest a portion of their unemployed capital.
Personal.
We had the pleasure of greeting iu our office iasi
evening Mr. Russell, tho experienced, able aud wide
ly known editor of that live paper, tbe Batnbridge
Argus 7 Mr. R. is here parity for the purpose of so
liciting bu-dness for his paper. It is already known
to our merchants that the Argus has a very wide cir
culmtioo in Georgia and in portions of Florida; and
itis therefore unnecessary for us u> remind them
that they would cousnlt their interest by giving Mr.
Roaaell their advertisements. The extension ot the
Gulf Road to Balnbridge, in regard to which thero ia
an interesting article from the Argus iu another
column, will increase greatly tbe commerce of this
city, and the proper and surest way of reaching the
people of that section is by u Ivortising in the leading
papers there. We commend oar friend to the friend
ly consideration of the bnsiness men of our city.
Look Out for Urcukvrs 1-VYhat Is It I
Regardless of consequences, on the 16th day of May
will be revealed something to be appreciated in this
warm weather, in these columns. myl—lw -
Pbok Philadelphia The new aud elegant steam
ship Wyoming, Captain Teal, arriv d here yesterday
from Philadelphia, with a large freight, making the
trip in seventy hours. Thu ship now bids fair to
make ae regular time as her consort, the T nawaDda,
wbioli, it has been remarked, is almost as regular as
clock work. Her machinery being new, worked stiff,
bulls now, wo are informed, working beautifully.
With two such reliable vessels as tbe Wyoming aud
Tonawauda, and having the best fccom iiodatious,
the Philadelphia line will uot fail to receive its full
share or busineas.
J Mr. J. S. Teal, the obliging Purser of this vessel,
has our thanka for late files of Philadelphia papers.
Literatuee.—Estill & Brother have kindly placed
oq our table tbe Richmond Eclectic aud the Land Wc
Lore, for May. It is unnecessary lo say that both ol
the present numbers of thqpe popular periodicals con-
tain interesting aud valuable matter. This is always
assured by tbe high character they have so uniformly
maintained.
We have been requested by Estill A Brother to
state that they have beeu appointed agents for tbe
last named, (Tbe Land We Love,) and that they aro
prepared to furnish city subscribers with the May
number at three dollars per annum, in advance.
The Alabm or Finn yesterday morning was caused
by the burning out of a chimney in the United States
Barracks.
Waltkb’s ’’Betbcat."—In accordance with an in
vitation extended some time, since, we made our
way, within a day or two past, to the pleasant abode
of our friend O’Meara, just beyond and in close
proximity to tbe Parade Ground. We found there
several of our personal friends, with whom we had a
social and a merry time, and came away fully con
vinced that, although Walter Is particularlygcood at
billiards, aud has and can keep a good place of that
kind, he Is equally as well adapted for the peculiar
position of the man who knows how to "keep a
hotel.” He has every facility for establishing a popu
lar institution, and. knowing the man as we do, we
feel assured that he la in a Air way of perfecting a
desideratum long felt, and oua which, when fully
completed, will be thoroughly appreciated by his le
gion of friends.—Advertiser.
