and street crossings, and answer the purpose well.
Loaded trucks aud other heavy' vehicles pass over
the crossings at all seasons without indenting them

Bold Robbery.—Saturday evening at a
late hour three negroes went to the stoie of Mrs.
Finnegan, on East Broad street, and while two of
them were negotiating a purchase, the third took
possession t f a piece of meat hanging near the door,
and made off with the spoils. He was Immediately
pursued by the lady, who is a widow, having no one
in charge, and while in pursuit of the thief tbe other
two colored gentlemen quietly went through the tiU,
taking the last red cent in the establishment. The
thief was not caogbt, and the female shopkeeper
bewails the fact that there was no man about the
premises to shoot or capture the scoundrels.
The moral of this is that -Mrs. F. should h&ve a-
partner, whose duties would be light and pleasant,
with a capital ot watchfulness and pluck.

James R. Dey, Esq.:
Sir—Tne Doable Refined Poudrette I bought fair'
two other parties in connection with myself—one of
them used it on cotton and corn, and thinks it an
swered finely; the other put it on cotton, an very
poor ground, and thinks it doubled his crop. I uqed
it on corn. It answered finely, and was thought- by
the hand that cultivated the crop to be fully equal to
Rhodes’ Super Phosphate. 1 also used it on about an
acre, of cotton, and 1 am clearly of opinion that it is
the best and cheapest fertilizer in use, and I expect
to order several tons this winter..
Y Youra, very respectfully. J
ISAAC POWELL.
Ellaville. Schley County, Ga., Oct. 4,1867,
The Double Refined Poudrette purchased of you
last spring, l thiny. increased my.crop of cotton 150
pounds per acre; put it upon worn out pine land, at
the rate of 200 pounds per acre, drilled in with cotton
seed. '•
Yours, &c„ & MONTGOMERY.
Salisbury, N. C., Aug. 10,1867.
James R. Dey, Esq.:
Dear Sir—I can safely say that your Double Refined
Poudrette is for superior to any other othor fertilizer
for cotton; for 1 have given it a lair trial this season.
Yours, JEHU FOSTERER. 1
Savannah, Ga., Sept. 25.1867.
James R. Dey, Esq., rresent.:
Dear Sir—I used the Double Refined Poudrette
iwiight ol you last spring, on corn. I think it increas
ed the yield one-half. I consider it an excellent
manure.
Respectfully, T. HOLCOMBE. .
Ridgeway, 8. C., Sept 21,1867. ,
Mr. James R. Dey:
8ir—I applied the Doable Refined Poudrette by irf
self, and iu combination with other fertilizers, on cot
ton, and am pleased with it; so much so that it is my
present intention to purchase a larger supply of you
tile next year to apply to my cotton crop.
Yours, very respectably,
HENRY O. DAVIS.
Rooky Mount, Edoeoombn, Co., N. C., Nov. 18, 1866.
James R. Dey, Esq.:
Sir—In reply to your inquiry of the results of oUr|
experience in the use of your improved Poudrette,
purchased of you for this year’s cotton crop, we would
beg leave to say that the present season hss been one
quite unfavorable to the action of 9II fertilikerB. '
Several kinds of manures were used by’ns, with the
exception of your Poudrette, with little Or no effect to
the crop.
