President immediately telegraphed Sherman

now agitates the current of fashionable life
in Europe is: “How are floe ladies to pre
serve themselves against vulgar imitation ?”
The other day at a ball in Nice, a Russian
Princess wore diamonds valued at one hun
dred thousand dollars; but so did the wife
of M. Hartman, who made bis fortune
by inventing the Magenta dye; her diamonds
were as rich and as valuable as ths Prin
cess’s. Similar events have occurred in
England, and Belgravia is disgusted at the
impertinence of “thecommon people.’*
The Wrong Train.—An unfortunate sea
captain of a vessel (who somewhat resem
bled Train;, walking the streets of Cork,
was taken for Train, and such a crowd gath
ered around him that he became alarmed,
and ran. The crowd pursued and oame near

to ”
Cotton at t*s Ports.—The New York
Times estimates that this season, to the 15tb
instaut, 1,357,000 bales have been received
at all the ports of the United States. Stock
340,000. Receipts at all the ports to the
same time last year, 1,105.000 bales, anl
stock 025,000. The receipts thus far at New
York have been 362,730 bales, and stock
47,500 bales.
