The way of the transgressor is hard, eaped|aJljr
when r allread icon is the moving ea ise of,the trans
gression. Yesterday T. Murray (white) and,Albert
Harris (colored) were.arralgned before Htt Honor,
the Mayor, on a oharge of having railroad ires in
their possession supposed to have been stolen. It* ,
appeared ftom tfcewyideace that Albert Harris had 4
the cupidity of hfs nature aroused by the sight of s
lot of iron in the railroad yard, and set about to accom
plish its removal, and broached the pHaa‘ to James
Taylor and Sam Hart (colored), who, with an honesty
which will meet with its reward, informed the offi
cials of the road of the fact. Harris took the Iron
and conveyed it to the yard of Taylor Without his
knowledge or consent. Subsequently Harris em
ployed Murray to haul tt to the shop of one Kelly for
the purposs of sale, but the sharp eyre dr the detec
tive were oo thorn, who succeeded in tikiog the par
ties into custody, lc does not appear that Murray’s

employed in hauling for Mr. Kelly. The case,

BiPrisi Sunday School Pic-Nic.—Tea-

Baptist Churches cl this city, with the parents,
friends and other guests, spent an agreeable day plo
nking at the ‘‘Isle or Hope.” They embarked on
the commodious steamer A]ax, and judging from the
happy fac3i of children and adults, they evidently
anticipated a joyous lime. Huge hampers, small bas
kets, ice-cream, and the other etceteras incident to
occasion of the sort, gave indication th*t the inner
man would be well attended to. Arriving on the
beautiful grounds of the Isle of Hope, they gave
themselves up to those innocent sports and recrea

evening returned to the city, without accident cf any

The address was to be delicVered by J. J. Kelly,
Esq-, the first President of the Oompsny, but at the
hour for that ex rcise, it having been ascertained
that Mr. Kelly could not be present. Judge Ru«efl
assembled the ladies, gnests and company on the
green, west of the house, and annoonced as Mr. Kel

Mercer responded by reading a letter from Mr. Kel
ly, veTy regretful of his enforced absence, renewing
his attachment to tho Company, and wishing its festi
val every success. Capt M. continued in an address,
which we have rarely heard equalled for an impromptu
speech, as we know this was. Ho held his aadieace
enchained by his eloquence, and received .great ap

but finding it Imperfect, prefer giving this brief de

The festivities were kept up till quite lato in the

the pnblic expression of tbs orator of tho day, and
tbe testimony of all the guests, was that the ladies
who gave tho entertainment deserved groat c.edit
for tbe energy, judgment and taste they had dis
played, and the support they had given to this oldest

Savannah. May 20—6 P. H. I
Co I ton.—In reporting to-day we find the usual
difficulty in making correct quotations, which at this
soason lias become chronic. There are scaicely any
buyers in the market, and but few lota offering, aud
when the parties to a transaction meet, they “meet to
part, and part to meet again,” as they are unable to
reconcile the dlflercnce in their views. With a tiew,
however, of giving an idea of the market, we may
state that middling cottons were offered to-day at 30c
yitbont finding purchasers, who cannot be induced
to give more tuau 29c for that class of fibre.
The receipts tc-lay amount to 330 bales.
