Appearance of the Army Worm In Abe
Southwest—Coxion Crop Pronounced
Lost.
The Louisiana papers at different points,
from the 16th to the 22d instant, are filled
with announcements that the army worm
has appeared, and at so early a stage of the
season as to make it almost certain no oot<
ton will be raised. They are talking about
ploughing up tbe cotton and plaotiog other
crops. The Picayune of the 22d gives this
advice:
We would not advise any to plough np
their cotton when it slill promises well; but
do not plant a single missing spot unless
with something else than cotton, and if any
field has gotten so “iu the grass,” and the
cotton so backward and poor as to be a
“desperate chance.” that or resuscitating it,
make np your mind to save the grass and
not the cotton. Ilake tb» hay wheuever tbe
grass is iu the proper stage to be rich and
nutritious, and save it, even if other crops
need attention at the time.
The appearance of the’ army worm so
early is said to be unprecedented, and por*
lands the woijst results. The New Orleans
Republican says:~
As a rule, the eatli/r the appearance of
the cotton worm, tbe more general and des
tructive will it be to the crop. We knew of
several fields ot .cotton on, the lower coast
that were completely stripped of their leaves
iu the latter piirt of July, 1864, but pujt ont
again in a few weeks, and would have pro
duead a late but foil crop had not the frost
intervened, t These were, however, excep

days of Jane. The reason for their being
so much mere diatructive in 1864 than in
1807 was that in the former year the cotton
phmtiug in Louisiana was confined ^almost
emVtely to the bottom or sugar lands below
Baton Rouge, while in the latter bot iilUe
cotton was planted io the delta, bat was
mainly confined to the uplands, where the

The appearances of tb$; cotton worm ib

I( was known in the Booth before the wu,
but as jt rarely appeared before the UK days

was thought to be beneficial ratheO-Ahao

reaturity of the upper of later balls. The
