The Same Old Game
Dispatches from Washington report that
the Senators elect from Georgia wereber-
juadeil (our telegram says j“in3trnoiea”)‘not
to claim their seats at tbs called session bf
Congress, fur the reqson that* a question,
which it was desirable - to avoid or postpone,
would thereby be .raised a3 to the right of
their State to representation in Congress.
The object of this manoeuvre is apparent
to the dullest comprehension.- It is part and
nircel of the Radical plot to make-occasion
or pretences for a squabble as to the result of
the Presidential election. They have already
attempted by-legislation to 1 -deprive three
States of the right of participation "in that
election—an extraordinary . assumption of
power, that must of itself produce difficult
complications—and now they 6eek to hold
other Southern States in a posiuou that will
afford them a pretext for excluding their
Presidential votes. Toe uuvarnisbed truth
is they design to count their votes if for
Grant and Colfax, but to reject them if for
Sermour and Blair. And the party playing
mis double-handed and revolutionary game
re-echoes the cry of its leader, “Bet us haye
peace,” and denounces its opponents as dla-
orcan’izers and rebels 1 -- .a
Georgia has already been restored.to re
presentation in Congress. Seven of her eight
Usprc’cntativea eject took their seats in the
U >a«e at the late regular session, and were
rally recognized as Representatives of a Stale
of the Union. The admission of her Sena
tors was not necessary to establish the fact
of representation or evidence the laet of her
compliance with the requirements of the.Re-
coustruction acts. And if Congress, after
thus accepting and acknowledging the retnrn
ot the iSnte to her full powers and rights in
the Union, may afterwards exerejsa a sur-
veilance over her local legislation, ..and for
objectionable acts by that body in a matter
ot State policy or law, exclude the Sti
again from representation and from, s

We have never used the term, it being, as
Webster says, rather vulgar, and have pre

“truly loll,’’ the designation self-appropriated
by the Southern Radicals, who arrogate to
themselvea alone att&ffi'ee for the Union,
though it is notorious-that large numbers of
them were blatent secestionists.
Inasmuch, however, as the' term “scala

name for a peculiar class of Southern people,
to designate whom a word is wanting in the
language, it will be after a while adopted, as
many other such terms have been before it.

above cited, there ih no derivation, and we,

In Spanish the word ksclavo means slave.
One of its diminutives is esclavejo. By
striking ont jbe termination, as js done when
many words.of the Romance languages are.
adopted into the English, we get esclavej.
But in Spanish the J is a guttural, of which
tbe best representative of oar language is a
G—and thus the nearest, way of sounding
esclavej would be kbclaveg. The V natu
rally runs into W; whence the pronuncia
tion of esolaveq easily glides into esclaweq,
or esclawao, from the influence of the W on
tbe next vowel. The initial E is cut off as is
very common, and compensation for the loss
of the first syllable is then made by the in
sertion- before the L of an A more naturally
than of any other letter. Esclawao becomes
thns SCALAWAG. . ’ . . *
Tne whole process is this: Esclavejo, es
clavej, ESCLAVEG, ESCLAWAO, SCALAWAG.—
This transmutation is according to toe strict
est principles of etymology.
Now, what iA the meaning of esclavejo ?
As we remarked above, itjs ft diminutive of
uscLAVo. a slave- It must, therefore, signify
a Ull-le slave, or a trifling slave, or a mean,
worthless slave i_ thence, by a.metaphor, ij,is
applied to any menu, worthless fellow what
ever, which is the signification' given.iqqts
