political issue; for whenever they do so they
will be sure to bring abont what they have
such good cause to dread—repudiation.
Whenever they attempt to place'in power a
political party pledged to the maintenance
interests as against the interests of
bond-holding, tax- payingfmasses,
that hour seals tbeir doom. As a general
thing the masses understand very little about
financial matters, outside of the value of the
currency which they handle in their daily
transactions. In fact, a large proportion of.
the voters of the country do not realize the
'actual depreciation of greenbacks. To them
a ten-dollar bill is a teu-dollar bill, it it is not
‘atCUnterfeit. and though Iheyare ‘feelingly
sensible of the fagUbat ten dollars now will
net buy as much broad or dry goods as for
merly, they attribute the circumstance to
the fact that bread and ,dry goods are higher
than they used to be, and so that- they.get
more for their produce and their labor, they
trouble themselves with no further inquiry.
It would be the height of folly for thejuond-
holders, whose princely incomes are ^derived
from the blood and sweat of the toiling mil.

they will be sure to do whenever they ob-
