T HE Faculty of Franklin Collrgo hovo r» solved to
give an aiinutil prize, of the value of about ten
dollars, in appropriate and well selected books, to the
best Latin scholar; and another to the best Greek
scholar, who shall enter the Freshman dnsi in
August, for a regular course. The names of (he young
gentlemen thus distinguished, and of the teachers by
whom they were educated, will be made public, that n
laudable emulation may be excited, and tho standard of
literature raised throughout the State.
The Latin prize, however, will not ho given to any
who shall not manifest, on examination, a thorough
krtmvjedgc of, nt least, Jacob’s Latin Reader, both
vols. Cicsnr’s Commentaries, all the Avars in Gaul,
Gould's Ovid, the whole of Virgil, Cicero’s Select Oru-
tions, nnd the Cataline and Jiigurthinc wars of Snllntt.
Tho Greek prize will not bo given for less than a cor
rect knowledge of Delectus a valuable work for begin
ners, John and Acts, Jacob’s Greek Reader, and Urae-
ca Minora.
A similur prize will be given fur the best knowledge
of Arithmetic, and Day’s Algebra, us far os the end of
Simple Equations.
The I.atin and Greek prizes havo been this day
awarded by the Faculty to Robert Harris, pupil ofthe
Rev. Mr. Smith of Powelton. The prizes now given
consist of the works of Cicero, in ten volumes, nod of
Homer in four volumes, hand join Ay bound, gill, and
lettered.
There was no candidate for the Mathematical prize.
It is desiicd by the Faculty that all the prizes be hereaf
ter taken.

W HEREAS ELDRIDGE DUKE, late of Tusca
loosa county, is charged, that bo did on tbcdtb
of July inst. feloniously, nnd of innlice aforethought,
kill and murder Claiborne Harris, in said county, nnd
it appears that the said Eldridgc Duke has eluded ar
rest by flight, and w not in custody;
Now, therefore, by virtue of the authority in me ves
ted, I do hereby ofler a reward of THREE HUND
RED DOLLARS to any person who may apprehend
and deliver the said F.ldridge Duke to the Sheriff of
said county of Tuscaloosa, that lie may be compelled to
answer the said charge of murder.

To be admitted into the University, the student must
• at least sixteen years of age. Before he matricu
lates, he must deposit with the Patron, all the money,

In the Medical School, tho Lectures on l^iysiologyr
i Medical Jurisprudence, and on Materia Medicu,
may be attended as separate courses, at the fee of fif
teen dollars each.
In the School of Moral Philosophy, besidea the lec
tures oil Metaphysics, Ethics anu Political Economy,
lectures are now given on Rhetoric and Belles-Lettres,
including English compositions.
In the School of Law, in addition to the usun! pro-
feHsinnul course of municipal Law, there will bo taught,
for the future, the Law of Nature and Nations, Civil
Government, und Constitutional Law.
In the School of Modern Languages,a Tutor is em
ployed toasHiNt in tlio instruction of the classes and J.
Hcrvc, Esq. has been engaged fur this duty.
The instructions are conveyed partly by lect tires, nnd
partly by the study of approved text honks; and., in all
eases, the assiduity of the student is tested by lifid
daily examinations.
Public examinations ore alio held twice a year, on a
plan which nflhrds a sure test ofthe proficiency of tho
student; nnd the result is communicated to the parent
or guardian.
When any student shall, on examination, give satis
factory evidence of his proficiency in tho studies of any
ofthe schools of the University, be may, cn a vote of
the Faculty, be declared a Graduate of that School; ami
it has been recently enacted, that graduation in the
schools of Ancient Languages, Mathematics, Natural
Philosophy, Chemistry, und Moral Philosophy, shall
entitle the student to an additional and higher degree,
with the title of Master of Arts of the University oj Vir
ginia.

of Pennsylvanians equivalent to acoursein that Insti
