Perceiving thftt there are obstacles to the
harmony of the democratic party growing in
some degree out of alleged differences of <*
pinion respecting the - political' vipws which
have been maibtajned by Hie 'Washington-
Union under the editorship of the undersign*
'ed, he feels 1 It'his duty to do what hie can,
eins&itatly and properly, to remove them.
He has therefore, determined to transfer his
entire interest in the establishment to his
partner, General Armstrong, and to .retire
frefcrtfoe 'editorial nhair to his private pur
suits in Tennessee.
Massachusetts had the first road, but it
was only three miles long. Pennsylvania
and Maryland followed, and South Carolina
was fourth, and in 1833 she had the longest
road of any of the States. But Pennsylvania
had then eleven roads, in all 212 miles long.
South-Carolina had but one road 241 miles
in length, up to 1st January, 1850, whilst
New-York hod 27, Massachusetts 33, and
Pennsylvavia 36. Georgia up to 1837 had
only one road, seven miles long, and now
she is the fifth State in the Union in respect
of her railroads. ' Connecticut had>'no rail
road in 1888, and now she has eleven. Two
of the Pennsylvania roads are State works.
One of them, the Philadelphia and Columbia
road, 82 miles long, transported during the
year 1851, 1,187,842 of eeal.

Keep out of DtVs.
If there is any thing galling, it is being
in debt. A man may be honest and true; but
woe to him. Woe to you, man if you get
into debt so deep, there is no seeing through.
You will be derided to your face and behind
your bock. The rascals will try every means
in their power to give you a bad reputation ;
and if they succeed in their machinations,
make up your mind to receive a goodly num
ber of kicks Such is the custom ; and they
say,’ you have no business to run into debt;
•so you hav'nt ifyou could have lived and done

Curious Fact.—There is a venerable ci
tizen how living in the neighborhood of Cin-
• cinnati, who, being in his eighty-sixth year,
can remember the signing of the Declara
tion of Independence. He has voted at ev
ery Presidential election since the orgnniza-
qilS" Commercial '
says: «He descended the Ohio river, and
passed the point where Cincinnati now stands,
before a single tree had been felled upon the
spot, and before even a thought of our pres
ent power had entered into the dreamy phan
tasies of prophetic speculation. Think of it!
One now among us—one among two hundreJ
thousand in the busy uproar of business—
one who stood upon the ground where we now
stand, before Cincinnati was born! We can
scarcely realize it; but yet it is so. The
onward march of impctaotB civilization has
’Vorked Wohders in this great country of
‘ours. This old'man can yet see to-read
without glasses, ahd is possessed of.the vigor
of middle life.”
