Heard From in Kansas,
W. W. Jackson, who brought the
the traction engiucto this eounty
and was afterwards arrested by the
Sheriff of Hart county, and made his
escape on tie way to Toccoa, has
written the following letter fo the
Hartwell Sun. The letter was regis¬
tered at Lincoln Kansas, and there is
no doubt about its being genuine.
LmcoN Co., Kansas Territory, |

ty and is a subscriber to the sun, or
st least I have hin. I was in your
town not long sines, and was arrest-*
tsd by the sherrif of your county, Mr.
J. P. Roberts, undor the chaigs of
stealing a traction engine and saw
mill. I am like the Man that stole
the Merchant Mill, he said he stole
the Mill aid got away with it and
went back after the dara and they
caught him, and that is the way of
me. I stole the Engine and got away
with it aud went back to get the saw
mill and they caught me. . When they
cotnents ttlking about carrying me
to Jefferson I dident have no ide of
going, and could have told Mr. sher
rif^nd Poliece that I was not going,
but I thought I would let them find
out thcmselvcR. I w argent no wasc
scared, but did not have any business
at Jefferson and therefore I didont
go. it is a poor man that wont nsk
hrtakin7 his neck rather thau meet
Tom Mcelhannon, of Jefferson. I am
acquainted with Tom. and I no he
is a bad one; and I knew when he
turned the key on me it was all night
with me, and just below toccea I
concluded to risk my chances on the
ground, and bo I did, and great was
the fall, but as good luck would have
it I fell on toq of the ground uuhurt
or uninjured, and away I .went like
a turkey te his heels. Mr. Webb
Johnson is too fltshey to run after
mee. my farher Justo run me fur a
race horse, but Mr. Johnson did not
no that, and I did not have time to
tell himt for when a man gits behind
me a hallowing halt I liaint got time
to tell him about horse rasing nor
Jumping ofi the train. Mr Roberts
dident no thet I Praetice Jumping ef

and that is a fast, and that is how
come me to get away. I want to
return my thanks to Mr Roberts and
Mr. Johnson for their kindjtreatment
they gave me while I was a prisner
I am mutch ablige to them for their
kindness to me while in their care
Mr. Sherrif, it is [the coldest wether

FRANKLIN COUNTY BAPTIST
CHURCHES.
M. 17. G- Corrects a Mistake
Missionary Work.
I see in tha Register of January
the 11th over the signature of T J S
the statistics of the Missionary
Bap. ist church of Franklin county.
Nui. her of shurches. ministers and
men.be*ship, stating, also, ’ the
amount of money sent up to the Tu
galo association at her last term;
which shows up that honorable body
in rather a bad light. Admitting
ithe fact that the $14.65, (the small
pittance) as T. J. S. states was all
that went up in the face of the let¬
ters to the Association, it does not
prove that this poor pittance was all
that the church gave for Missions,
and educational purposis, I tell you
nay. And if T J S had been a mem
ber of that august body; (tlnugh I
presume lie is a member of one of
those churches that sent up this pit
tance,) he would certainly have been
that the $14,65 he alludes to was a
very small amount of what they
really did give. And for tfie bene:
efit of those who may read the min¬
utes of the Tugala Association, and
(o present that body fairly before
the public, I beg leave to make some
statements, which I hold to be facts:
ltit. The Association while in sess¬
ion took up a collection oi some
thirty dollars, besides corn, flour,
clothing, etc., for Sister Heaton.
2nd. Ten dollars and eighty-two
cents to Bro. Erwin.
3rd. $14.65 by the churches.
4th. Received from executive
board, $5.50c.
5th. Received lrom W. J. Ilayes,
$41 which had been put in his hands
for Bfo W W Stowe, this amount re¬
maining iu his hands after Brother
Stowe had left school.
6th. Collected at the stand on Sun
day for missions, $41.15c.
7th. Paid to the Clark one dollar
for each church, amounting in the
aggregate to twenty-four dollars, to
compensate said clerk for recording
the minutes in the association book.
Now if T J S or any one else,will
examine the minutes of the Associa¬
tion, and make their own calculation
they will find that instead of the
churches paying only $14.66, they
have reallypaid, iu all $201.12c. Now
these figures are but a small amount
for so able, so honorable a body as
the Tugalo Association, to give to
the Master’s cause, ■when we
take into consideration hit. unbound¬
ed goodness, and His abundant mer¬
cy. If the brotherhood of the Tu¬
galo Association had given five times
the amount they did give, they
would have been unprofitable ser¬
vants; they would only have done
their duty. The above is written iu
justice to the Association, as the
Register is read by a Zargc number
of people, end by various denomina¬
tions, and not by any means to cast
reflection on T. J. S., as it is admit¬
ted that he was correct aa to the
amount sent up. M. W. G.
