DEATH HY HANGING.
The awful death of Monpu,
whoso execution was botched in
Columbus, Ohio, yesterday, has a
parallel in the hanging of Jefferson,
the negro murderer, of Brooklyn
who underwent capital punishment
in the Raymond street jail four
years ago.
Morgan fell seven feet when the
trap was sprung yesterday, without
breaking his neck, and the band
loosening from his arms lie seized
the rope above his head and tried to
free himself from its terrible clutch
upon his throat.
Two physicians siezed his arms
and held them while he struggled in
the agonies of slow strangulation,
and it was 24 minutes before Ins
heart ceased to beat.
When Jefferson was hanged in
Brooklyn the knotshoutd have been
under his ear, slipped to the
back of his head, so that, the rope
was not drawn tight about his
throat.
The dying man’s struggles were
terrible. He swung to and fro at
the ent of the rope, and agonizing
choked cries came from his throat.
To add to the horror of the scene,
his arms were so loosely secured that
lie managed to get his head up high
enough’ to tear the black cap from
his face, and the grotesque distor¬
tions of his face as he swung and
struggled, grasping at the cruel rope,
were terrible.
The spectator* gazed, fascinated
with horror, upon the awful spec¬
tacle until death came to the mur¬
derer’s relief, and then the sheriff
tainted, and many others were taken
sick.
Either capital punishment must
bo abolished altogether or some
method adopted Whereby death may
be accomplished witnout danger o£
such fearful cruelties.

ments of humanity.—New York
