REV. J, H. PARK
PREACHED AT WEST BOW
KRMV1LLE ON SUNDAY
ON UNIVEItAL SAL¬
VATION.
We attended preaching at West
Boweruville on Sundry, And listened
to a strong sermon by Rev. J. II.
Park of Wnltoi, County, from me
following text.
“And this is the victory that over
cotuoth the world, even our faith.—
1st John, fitli crispier mid hitter part
of 4th verse.
Wv did not take notes of the ser«
nion and cannot give a full synopsis,
As the sermon was upon linos of
thought not usually heard from our
pulpits, nothing short of a full report
would do it justice.
Mr. Park said: That faith is the
mainspring of the human action in
nil human affairs. Every enterprise
that is undertaken, every blow that
is stricken is prompted by faith in
the ultimate results. I believe in a
God who is infinite in all his attn
butes.* j Infinite in power, goodness
justice, love, mercy and wisdom, I
believe in a God who punishes and
rewards, and who will punish and
reward and discipline, until the last
sinner has been subdued and every
soul m the tiuivorse lias boon giivl-d
It is difficult to undeist.tiul how
men can believe the doctrine of end*,
less pain and woe, inflicted by an
omnipotent hand, guided by infinite
love, justice and mercy. They bavo
learned it from the pulpit where
spiritual pabulum is usually obtain¬
ed . It has been taught from thq
pulpit, that before the creation of
of man God foresaw, foreknew and
foreordained, the eternal pnirt and
unutterable woo of a vast majority
of the helpless creatures ot his own
creative hand. Tender babes were
consigned to a pit from whioh there
was no deliverance, into which no
gleam of hope ever miters. This was
tho doctrine generally taught in this
country a hundred years ago. It was
too hoirible and has been 'softened
by the Arminuns. They say that
God desires the salvajtion of all men,
and would save ail if he couid, but
eannol save man against his will.
What blasphemy! The God thnt
holds the storm and wave in his
hand, that spoke this mighty globe
into existence,that created the count¬
less, glowing orbs that whoel in end¬
less circles through the wide sky,
the God who is infinite in every at¬
tribute, that has no uval in the uni¬
verse; thwarted in his greatest work
in )’y the God feeble will of man. I believe
a who is infinite m power,
and will consumate His will and do
all Ins pleasure ;o heaven and on
earth.
m Where did , man get his will? God
gave it to him and fore saw all the
consequences from vho beginning,
and if the will God g. ve him is t0
compass his rum, then ruin was io.
evitable from the begioniug.Tnere is
no difference in ordaining mans end¬
less woe, and endowing him with a
will and an ngr-iiey,* that Ood fore¬
saw, would certainly lead to Ids
damnation. The result is the same;
it God ordained for him a portion of
endless woe, his doom is fixed; if
God mocked him with a will and an
agency that lie lores aw would lead
to endless woe, Ids doom is equally
fixed‘and certain. It makes no dlf
fereii'-o with the poor sufferer, by
which journey he reached his unal¬
terable doom.
Thu child that has j*st crossed the
line of accountability commits one
sin mid is cut down, and plunged
into the lurid pit from which them
is uovor a deliverance. When num*
burlcss millions ot years have swept
into the past, it lviscs its eyes to
the God of love and mercy, and cries:
Lord! Lord! how long? is it not
enough? The answer is returned:
your torture has just begun, it shall
never, uovor, end. Is this the via
tory that overcometh the world?
If the doctrine ot endless punish¬
ment bo true, the heathen lies down
on a bed endless of pain, They never
leavd flte name of Jesus, never
heard of the plan of salvation, but
because they do not believe in him
of whom they never heard, they arc
dropping into hell by tlu hundreds
of millions. But optnkm is begin¬
ning to be divided, and there is a
doctrine abroad that they are judged
according to the lights that they
haye. It is an admission that they
arj saved through ignorance. Have
you faith in a system of salvation
through ignorance. If so, why not
burn the btble, tear down the chnrcln*
os’ and school lions©*, abolish
learning, and l«t the world go back
into the night of barbarism, and let
the world be saved through igno¬
rance.
The world is not saved through
ignorance, it is not an element in
mans salvation, The broader a
mans faith is, the more good it cm*
braces, the more complete is his sal¬
vation and he Is saved here in this
« orld. II© goes forth to the duties
of life with more confidence and
with greater capacity for doing good..
Ho has faith in God, confidence m
the ultimate triumph of God, and
the final welfare of man., The sol
dier who has confidence iu his com
rades in arms, and faith in his Cap¬
tain and General, faith in the success
of his cause and in final victory, is
more efficient than ono who looks
for defeat, doubts his comrades and
commander, and doubts finafUctory.
