WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1875.
1876
Will be a year of great events. Besides
the Centennial exhibition, it will be a year
of elections, when the President, Governor,
Congressmen, members of the Legislature,
and county officers will be chosen. Every
citizen should be informed upon these sub
jects, and The Georgian purposes to fur
nish the necessary information to Its read
ers for the low price of $1.50 for a year’s
siibscription.
The year 1876 will be unexampled in
the history of material progress. Every
where the ingenuity and skih of man will
be directed with renewed energy to the de
veloping our common country and utilizing
its vast productions. In our own section I
important enterprises, in which every citi
zen has an immediate and tangible interest,
will be prosecuted to completion. The
construction of the Marietta and North
Georgia railroad, the navigation of the Et
owah, the erection of factories, the devel
opment of mines, are enterprises which
interest all intelligent citizens. The Geor
gian will keep its readers fully apprized of
these matters; every good citizen should
keep posted regarding them ; therefore all
should subscribe for the paper.
Soon after the opening of the new year,
a series of historical sketches, embracing
all facts obtainable with regard to the early
settlers of Cherokee, their customs, habits,
and manners, a full account of the abo
rigines, and a succinct but complete history
of the noteworthy settlements in the coun
ty from their infancy to the present time,
will be commenced in The Georgian.
Everybody should be acquainted with the
history of the locality in which he lives
•nd, if he lives in Cherokee, he can not at
tain that knowledge more easily and cheap
ly than by subscribing for The Georgian,
and reading the articles as they appear.
But aside from the interesting events
which the new year v ill disclose, every
head of a family worthy of the position
should take the county paper for his own
and his family’s sake; for, in its columns
he will find, each week, every loca’ occur
rence Worth mentioning, he will get the
benefit of suggestions which may save him
much time and expense, and will be ena
bled to keep abreast of his neighbors in
intelligence. A county paper furnishes
matter whidh can not be had anywhere
else; its editor is identified with the people
in whose midst the paper is published, and
he understands what will best conduce to
the enjoyment and edification of his circle
of readers. The Georgian docs not make
high pretensions, though its aim is the pub
lic good, its desire is to please and profit its
patrons and increase in usefulness. 11 is
act ns large a sheet, nor as ably edited, nor
aa well printed, as some papers we might
name, but we believe it occupies a place in
Cherokee county which no other paper,
however large, ably managed and finely
gotten up, can satisfactorily supply. This
being confidently believed, we do not hesi
tate to declare that The Georgian is of tar
greater value to the people of this county
than any journal printed elsewhere, no
matter what inducements in premiums and
low subscription price are offered.
In conclusion, we would remark that if
a locnl newspaper is beneficial to a county,
all good citizens should encourage and
support it; if the paper is worth anything.
It is worth a dollar and a half a year; if
one time is more fitting than another to
subscribe, now Is the time, when we are
•bout to 1h) ushered into a new year, full of
activity and “big with fate."

\A_ Card*
To the citizens of Cherokee
county :
After having been engaged for
nine years in the mercantile busi
ness in your midst, I have become
convinced that the credit system is
all wrong. To follow it, a merchant
has either to charge enormous pro
fits, or ruin himself by selling ©n
time. Those of you who pay
promptly have to pay such large
profits that, the merchants can af
ford to lose the accounts of your
neighbors who are not disposed to
pay, or who are unfortunate and
can not pay. In other words, good
men have to pay for the goods pur
chased by their unfortunate or
dishonest neighbors. This state of
things is wrong, and when a man
is satisfied that he is wrong he
should change his course, or be
held responsible for living in the
wrong.
Fully convinced that the above
position is correct, I have deter
mined to sell, after the Ist of De
cember next, exclusively for cash
or barter. I can and will sell at
least twenty per cent, cheaper, the
stock through, than I have ever
sold. lam in favor of every per
son paying for hi« own goods, and
hope none of my old customers
and friends will be offended when
I say to them that after the Ist ©f
December I will sell for cash or
barter only. I will be no respecter
of persons, will require cash*from
every one, and positively will net
open my books to charge asef item,
be it ever so small, to the best naan
in the county. If you have cash
or barter, call and examine my
stock and prices before purchas
ing elsewhere, and you will then
be fully satisfied with my new de
parture. I charge nothing for ex
hibiting goods, or giving prices,
and when you have examined th«
one and heard the other, you will
then be convinced it is to your in
terest to pay as you go.
All those who are indebted to
me, or to the firm of McAfee &
Moss, must come forward and make
immediate settlements. This is
my last call.
Very respectfully,
15-lm J. M. McAFEE.
