cupied their minds in these delight

Henderson, Prof. Connor interpre
ting and showing himself a graceful

gretted when the glowing west

training, and the same number of
speeches would Imw been creditable
to any college. The first and second
prizes were won respectively by Ed
Crook of Jacksonville* and W. Min ter
Wimbw/yof Atlanta.and, while none
of tM sons of our county were the
i/rtmediate victors, their efforts well
merited the applause of the audience
and the congratulation of friends.
The prizes were, awarded by our
townsman, Hon^O. G. Janes, who
delivered an appropriate address of
polished elegance, pregnant with
ideas calculated to inspire hope and
enthusiasm in the hearts of all yobng
people.
The Musical Concert at night was
given by Prof. Snow and class, and
words fail us when we attempt an
adequate description. Prof’s. Snow
and Aflleck arc musicians of the high
e*t order; the class was composed
mostly of young ladies, some of
whom exhibited a degree of training
and natiffal musical talent that was
truly wonderful. The instrumental
musio was grand, hut whether or not
it exceeded in melody the warbled
words that were breathed through
beauty's lips isaquestioii hard to de
cide. The callous wretch whojie eye
dues not kindle and whose emotions
are not awakened at

Death of A. Willingham.
Died in this county on the 27th of
June, A Willingham,.after an ill
ness of only u few days. lie was
born in Coosa county, Ala. on March
4th 2835, and resided there till the
year 1800, when he moved to Coweta
cotinty, nearNewnan. He here be
gan teaching school, hut his pros
pects wereddighted by the war. lie
enlisted in the .war in April 1801
under ('apt. Long, fts-wagthe case
with most of his comrades of Ihe ar
my of Virginia, his fame as iVsoldier
is unsullied and spotless. Returning
home from the war he recommenced
teaching school and wus successful
in the business. He married the
daughter of Rev. Mai'iou Sewell,
and as a husband he was provident
amT devoted. He was a member
of tho Missionary Baptist church,
and in his deatli the denomination
have suffered an irretrievable loss.
He was a member of the Masons
which order he joined in 1850. As u
citizen, .lie was law-abiding; as a
friend he was true, an4 a* a Chris
tian lie was blameless.
His bereaved family have our
sympathy in their bereavement,
as a consolation wo would have tj
look upwards to the happy
which now is hie rwward.
The scattering, rains of the
last fe.w days, have greatly bene-
litted the parching crops. There is
a section of our county commencing
at Jus. Young’s and running East
which has been so very dry that
crops are materially injured.
Droughts are an evil without a rem
edy; oven the prayers of the right
eous uvaileth hut little.

made a mistake in the schedule of
the road, it leaves at 0 o’clock a. in.

There was a serious difficulty at
Peck & Allen’s saw mill last {Satur
day evening.In the row one Mr. tStqi-
ton cut Samuel Bean pretty severely
with a knife. Bean though we learn
is doing well. Sqiton lias left for
purls unknown. Septon was drink
ing some, so report says.
Next Thursday is tho 4th of July,
the day that the Ringgold Conven
tion msets. We think all our dele
gatus should attend and nominate
some good man that will leave Mr.
Felton at home to preach in the
meeting house that Bill Arp refers
to, We think Mr. Felton ought to
save souls and let others save the
country.
