THE EXPRESS.
Oedartown, July 4th
Farm and Fireside.
For Fighting Husbands.
I'ou't think when you have won a
wife that you have won a slave.
Don’t think that your wife has less
feeling than your sweetheart. Her
relationship to you is simply changed
not her nature.
Don’t think thut you can dispense
with all the little civilities of life to
wards her you marry ar.d that you
have the right to get drunk and abuse
her. She appreciates these things
quite as much as other women.
Don’t be gruff and ruff at home.
Had yon been thut sort of a fellow
before marriage tho probabilities are
you would be sowing on your own
buttons still.
Don’t muko your wife think she is
an encumbrance on you hy giving
grudgingly. What shn needs give
cheerfully, as if it wore a pleasure to
do so. She will leel better, and so
’ will you.
Don’t meddle with affairs of the
house under her charge. You have
uo more right to be poking your
nose into tho kitchen thun she has to
walk into your piuce of business and
give directions to your employees.
Don’t find fault with her extrava
gance in ribbons, etc., until you hove
■hut down on cigars, tobacco, beer,
whisky, etc.
Don’t leuve your wife at homo to
nurse the children on the score of
economy, while you bolt at night to
•ee tho show or spend a dollar on
biljiards.
Don’t bolt your supper and hurry
off to spend your evenings lounging
•round away from your wife. Before
marriage yon couldn't spend evenings
enough with her.
Don t prowl in the loafing resorta
until midnight, wasting your time ii
culpable idleness, leaving your wife
lonely at homo to brood over yonr
uegleut and her disappointment.
Don’t think the woman von prom
ised to “love, cherish and protset”
becomes your servant as her part of
the aontraot and that you are allowed
to take a brush to her without resist
ance.
Don’t think that board and clothes
is a sufficient! return for all that a
wife does for you.
Don’t expect a wife to love and
honor yon,if yon prove a brute un
worthy of lave ancVhonor.
Don’t caress your wife in pnblio
and snarl and growl at her in private.
This proves yon both a hypocrite and
a dog.
Don’t wonder that your wife is not
as aheerful as she used to be, when
she labors from aarly morn till late at
night to pander to the comfort and
oaprice of a selfish pig who has not
aoul enough to appreciate her.
Don’t if your wife has faults, be
constantly raminding her of them,
while you have never a word of com
mendation for her virtues.
Don’t forget to respeot your wifs
if you wish to he respeoted.
Short Rules for Young Christians.
1. Never negloct daily private pray
er: and when you pray, remember
that God is present, and that Uo
bears your prayers (lleb. xi 6). t
2. Never nogleot daily private Bi
ble reading; and when you read, re
member that God is speakiug to you,
and thut you are to believe and not
upon what He says, beliove all buck
sildings with the neglect of these
two rules (John v. 30.)
3. Never let a day pass without
trying to do something for Jesus.
Every night reflect on what Jesus
lias done for you, and then ask your
self, What am I doing for Him?
(Matt. v. 19)
4. If you uro in doubt ns to wheth
er a thing be right or wrong, go to
your room and kneel down and usk
God’s blessing upon it (Col. iii. 1?)
If you cannot do this it is wrong
(Rom. xiv. 23).
5. Nevor take your Christianity
from Chistains, or argue that because
such people do so and bo, therefore
you may (11 0 r. x 12). You are to
ask yourself, How would Christ not
in my place? and strife to follow
Him (John x. 27).
Neyer believe what you feel, if it
contradicte God’s word. Ask your
self, Can what I feel be true, il'God’s
words is true? and if both cannot be
true, believe God and make your own
heart the liar(Uom. ii. 4; 1 John V.
11.)
As u largo ch.S) of our readers lik
to have something on the preaohfi ,
we insert the following balcii of an
eodotes for their benefit, with I he re
quest that tln-re be no laughing; each
of tho reverend gentlemen‘siamid
belongs to the North Go., Ootifo-
•nee:
S;.m Jones was taking around tin
hat for a missionary collection, lie
nietl a well-dressed young mail in
the congregation, ami lie approached
him, flaying: “My friend, don’t yen
want to give u dollar to tho Lord?”
“Yes,” replied this young man.
“Then hand itover,”said Sam. “No,”
said lie, “I believe I’ll take it myself
I'm afraid you’ll not go!” Sam
wilted.
The ltev. W. 1’ .Pledger was con
ducting at one time a ririval at a
country ohurob. He walked down
the ai»le shaking hands with all as
he went. ■ When lie got to the door
ho saw a green looking lad, with cop
peras pants on that looked about bix
inches too short, leaning against the
door-facing looking on, bro. Pled
ger approached him, and taking his
luud, ssked: “My young friend,
don’t yuu want to go with us to heav
en?” Greeny looked at him with
blank surprise, and in innocent ac
cents inquired: “Areyougwiue right
now?” Pledgor wilted.
Well Pul.
One of the editors of the Atlanta
Constitution, writing from Washing-
tonCity, June 16th, makes the follow
ing happy hit:
It iB rumored here that Gov. Col
quitt has been invited to Chauta-
quun, N. Y., in August, to attend the
anuual Sunday-school meeting
which takes place there. This is no
doubt the result of the favorable im
pression made by the Governor at
the International Sunday-school
Convention. If he is invited, I hope
he will attend. I heard Col. Bob
Ingersoll promise Col. R. A. Alston
yesterday thut he would como to At
lanta this fall and deliver one of his
lectures. If Gov. Colquitt will go
up North, and Col. Ingersoll come
South, the two seotions would under
stand mere about the religious sen
timents of each other. Both of these
gentlemen preach, but they preach
from different standpoints. One is
afraid of hell, and need not he; the
other is not afraid of hell, but ought
to be. If Col. Ingersoll can convince
our people there is no hell, he will,
save them a great deal of trouble m
this world. If Gov. Colquitt can
convince the people pf the North
that there is a hell he may save them
a great deul of trouble in the next
world.

A Two Faced Baby.
The Cincinnati Gazette prints a
letter from Glynwood, Ohio, which
■ays: The wife of Green Bailey a
farmer living near here, gave birth to
one of the greatest oariosities I have
Jiaanl of. The ohild is a common-
■ised one, well-formed in its lower
limbs and body up to its shoulders.
It had two sets of arms, all well-
formed, oxoept that one pair was back
of the other, and worked backward.
It had but one head, but the head had
two faces on it, one on each side;
both faces were well in all the organs.
It breathes from both sides, whioh
the doctor says indicates the exis
tence of two pairs of lungs. Mr.
Bailey is quite jubilant over it, and
•ays it will be a fortue to him. Both
mother autl ohild are doing well.”
That’s nothing! Down herein
Georgia we have got plenty of “two
faced men.
An owl, shot near Burlington;

Philosophy of Rain.
To understand the philosophy of
rain, a few foots from observation
must bo remembered. Were the at
mosphere at at all tiinse of a uniform
temperature, we should never have
any rain or hail, or snow. The wa
ter absorbed by it in evaporation
form the sea and earth would descend
in an imperceptible vapor, or cease
to bo obsoi-bsd hy the air when i t
was onoe fully saturated. The ab
sorbing power of the utmosphore, and
consequently its capacity to retain
humidity iB proportionately greater
in warm (than cold air. The uir
near the snrfaoe of the earth is war
mer than in the region of tho clo"ds
The higher we ascend form the earth
the colder we find the atmosphere.
Hence the perpetual enow on very
high mountains in the hottest oli
mate. Now when from continued
evaporation, the uir is highly satura
ted with vapor, through it be invisi
ble and the sky cloudless, its temper
ature ie suddenly reduced by ourrents
descending from above or ruBliing
from a higher to a lower latitude; its
capacity to retain moisture is dimin
ished, olouds are formed, and the re
sults is rain. Air condenses when
it cools, and, like a sponge filled with
water and compressed, pours out the
water which it cannot hold. How
singular, yet how simple the philoso
phy of rain.
Mrs. C. H. Vurner, in the Griffin
Sun, says that Polly Barcley was
hung in Wilkes county about the
year 1806. That she murdered her
husband, aud on her way to the gal
lows she jumped from the cart and
flew at the Sheriff, scratching his
eyes and fsoe in a frightful manner.
