When .lb country editor solicits
mihs-.cibors for his paper lie* is often
•net. with tin- reply that they can get
the New York Herald for a dollar a
year and they can't afford to pay two
dollars for a small country sheet.
The subic. iher forgets that the c. e.
weekly talks for his peopl , their in
terests, their country and their town,
One may read the New York Herald
or the New York unylhing-else lor
tlfty years and not one liue will he
eeo about his neighbor or the little
incidents daily transpiring in his
midst. Wo will pay ten dollars a line
for ev«*ry line written during the past
twenty years in the interest of Ce>
dnrtown, Buchanan, Polk or Hnral*
son counties in the Herald, the mou-
ey to be paid on delivery of papers
containing it. It seems to us that
the merchants of the towns forget
the duty they owe the country press.
The profession is honorable and is
entitled to all reasonable support, it
cannot afford to work f*«r nothing
and t hrow in the paper. Tne news-
pap'T is a continual advertisement
of the town. Every week its sub
scribers are told of the advantages to
be derived from trading in its place
of publication. Then away with
your “big dollar paper.” The conn
try press cannot allord it and pay for
what its proprietors and printeis eat
and wear.

Washington, pec. 13, 1878.
It is an interesting but not impor
tant question whether or not Senator
Gonkling will attempt to prevent ths
confirmation of Mr. Hayes’ New
York Custom House appointees.
Tho Senator’s friends are not United
in belief on tho point. Mr. Conk-
ling srema to think of late tlmt reti
cence is one of the attributes of great
ness Mr. Conkling has what has
been culled the Presidential maggot
in his head. There is no proof of
his having followers outside ol New
York, ami it seems certain that his
nomination would he the beginning
of endless diseeiitions in the Rtqmb-
lit an party.
Yesterday, while Blaine was speak
ing to all the people the Senate Chum-
bee would contain, Mr. Conkling was
ihe one apparently uninterested per
son present, lie was writing letters
all the time. The enmity between
these two very prominent lb-publi
cans may have no had consequences
lor either ol them or to the Republi
can party now, hut if .itl»*r should,
be nominated for. the Presidency
there would be trouble. Mr. Conk-
ling has too many eiieiuiih in Leu
M«te candidate.
Mr. Blaine’s speech, by the way,
was folly to his usual standard. It
was an ingenious arrangement and
an eloquent reading of paragraphs
from the Boston Traveler, B..ngor
Whig, and New York Tribune. That
part of ii which relates to uffaira in
the Souiii will be instantly known to
bo false by all Southern men, and the
speaker was as unhappy as ever in
attempting to connect his c ncl.u
sions with his facts. He has a mind
which is neither l->gical nor lair, and
his studied efforts in tire be in. to, even
more tlun his harangues upon tl
stump exposed lim (act. Mr. Thur
man proposed an amendimnl to Mr.
Blaine’s ivsoli i.n and spoke for
Weiity nnniiies. Mr. Lamar follow
ed. The discussion will he renewed
