In the Honato, on the J9tb, Mr. Ed-
Tho Suez Canal.
A letter from Cairo to tlio Eastern
Binlgot, dated tlio 31st December, hiivh:
“ The present state of the Suez canal is
far Irom satisfactory. Tho canal is
neither couiplotul nor iu good repair,
ami if matters aro left as they are ut
present it will hccomo uselonu in a few
yonrs. It is broad enough to accommo
date thren steamers abroast, but its
depth is ho variablo that one ship only
can pass through it at a time. When a
vessel comes from Buoz the ships com
ing from Europe must wait at Fort Haul,
and if the ship gotsnground on the surnl
tho whole communication is stopped
until it is sut. afloat again. This, of
course, causes great injury to trade, and
complaints are frequent. Tho ohiof
cause of tho evil is the want of money.
The Engl if h, who pro tho canal moro
thun any other nation, liavo long been
thinking of getting the canal into thoir
own hands, but a majority of two-thirds
of tlio simroliolderH isneciHBary in order
to change tho management, and ns the
viceroy is the possessor of one-thiril of
tho shares, ho has practically tho cast
ing vote, It is true that one-third of
tho shares are also iu the possession of
Englishmen, but the attempts which
have been made to indues the viceroy
to dispose of his share* havo hitherto
broil fruitless. The khodivo evidently
feared that England will become too
powerful on tbo canal, and therefore
prefers tlio atatua quo. As for M. De
LessepH, he continues to send protests
to CoiiHtautiuople about tho caual duns,
aud his ilnauces aro becoming worse
every day. The cost of the maintenance
of the canal aud di edging-works is from
15,000,000 to 20,000,000 francs a year,
while his total receipts this year liavo
only amounted to 30,000,000 francs, nud
it is very uncertain whether tnoy will
bo maintained at that figure. Mor
oliunts here uro unanimously of opiuiou
that something must bo done to pre
vent thi niHoful work from being ruined,
aud that M. Do Lossopa should either
bo allowed greater freedom of notion,
or bo given un opportunity of selling
the shares to a now company.”
