Tho prusont prico (15 1-2 in Now York) roducod to a gold vnluo would bo but a fraclion ovor 13c. In other words, cottou is worth but a small fraction moro than it has aver aged for tho last fifty yoara. And yot how very different is tho vnluo of money now, as represented by its purchasing powor. Take tho decade from 18-10 to 1850, whou cot tou ranged lower than at any other tiuio boforo or siuco. Middling cot ton avornged 8o in Now York during tlieso ten yoara. Bacon was worth then, afloat, -lc, coffuo 8c; sugar Co, nud other things in propotion. Ah everybody knows, tho onormous iucronBO of tho precious motals conse quent upon tho disoovorios iu Califor nia anil Australia, has greatly iucroas- od tho soiling value of all other pro ducts, and yet cottou is Baid to bo higher, whou it is selling at uo higher prico than it has averaged for fifty years.
