North, tho Columbus Enquirer gives

gable from below the factory dam to
Apalachicola, Fla., 'alls ono huudrod
and twenty feet from just, nbovo the
Coinmbus factory to tlm steamboat
landing. Tlio distance Ih three and u
half miles. This will afford power
enough to run a million and a quarter
spiiiill* s, and furnish employment for
nearly sixly thousand people, and
promising a basis for a population for
imlf a million. Tho present dam nt
Columbus will run 180,090 spindles.
There are now seven cotton and wool-
on muunfiictoriea in Columbus, all

They are now working 35,000 spindles
nnd 1,500 looms, and take about
8,000 bales of cotton niiuiliilly. The
river bed is composed of rock, and
plenty of it can bo easily scoured for

on that class of our farmers who did
not plant sufficient com to do them
this your, and great uneasiness has
been felt by all in regard to tlm mat
ter. Wo are happy to state, however,
that Bethel Grange P. of H., in this
county, has taken tho initiatory i
measure which, if adopted by gran
gers, wiil afford instant an full relief
to tho farmers. Tho master of this
grange has ascertained what reason
able amouut of money will cuablo
each needy member of the grange to
muko a crop this year. These
amounts were aggregated and a note
for the whole made nnd signed by
every raorabev of tho grange, aud a
loan negotiated at u reasonable in
ti rest. This plan can be adopted by
all tho granges aud money can be
procured on reasonable terms to buy
supplies with which to make a crop.
This organization which has boon
abused by some in the past, has now
an opportunity to show to all that it
possesses tho power and the will to do
much good, and make tho farmer in
dependent of liens and mortgages.—
